Anyone used WIA along with Financial Aid?

Nursing Students LPN/LVN Students

I'm set to begin LPN school this fall and did receive a decent amount of financial aid.

I have a shortage that may be covered by WIA. Just curious to hear from anyone experienced with this program.

It is quite intense for such a small amount of FA. A 3-4 hour test, registering with TN Career Center and job placement/monitoring for 6 months or longer after graduation. :banghead:

Anyone?

I'm in TX as well and many of my fellow students have the WIA program they have said its great. They work harder cause they know i they fail the have to pay it back.

I receive WIA and they have basically covered all my tuition leaving my Pell grant for books and uniforms. I also receive a monthly gas check. They were very vague about the gas check and told us "we don't do that" at first. After they learned who all carpools with who they told us we would get a certain amount per day for the "driver" only. Sneaky! lol

WIA is really a very good thing. It was a lot of hoops to jump through in the beginning but if someone is going to give me free money, Ill jump however high they tell me. Once you get all the paperwork done etc., the hoops get lower and it really is a breeze. Another thing that is good about WIA, it is not based on income. Not once have I showed them a tax return or a pay stub.

Good luck and my advice is to go for it. Jump through the hoops, you won't be disappointed.

At my school's LPN program, WIA is giving every student $1500 throught the course of study. I think it breaks down to $350/semester for Semester 1&2, then $800 for semester 3. They will pay for uniforms, shoes, stethescopes, blood pressure cuffs, immunizations, mal. ins., and then in sem. 3 they pay $500 for a NCLEX-PN review course, and also pay for the acutal NCLEX-PN.

They make you pay up front, mail them the receipts, and they will reimburse you.

After graduation, if you fill out a survey every 3 months, they'll send you $25 gas cards.

3 students in the program qualified for extra money to cover tuition. But all of us got the $1500. No income guidelines or anything. It's a pretty sweet deal.

You can usually find out about it through your local employment office.

My experience with WIA was really good as well. The application process was easy and was accepted into the program within a week. I too had my entire program paid for, receive $25 gas card weekly, and will have NCLEX paid for. It's great program, and without it, there would have been no way that I could have attend school.

anyone interested in learning about wia training programs in your state may find this link helpful http://www.careeronestop.org/wiaprovidersearch.asp

click on your state and then look for "education" or "training programs" or something similar. sometimes it is helpful to contact the school directly and "work backwards" from there. good luck!

I have have also heard really good things about this program, worth checking out!

i am a wia case manager in wisconsin (was thinking about going back to school for nursing that's how i ended up on this site).

i would like to clarify that this list is a list of potentially eligible training programs. the reason i say potentially is that each region (a collection of counties governed by a workforce development board) sets its own rules about eligible programs. usually they will only fund high wage/high demand jobs. the catch is they have to see it as high wage/high demand in the area you live. so if nursing is in demand in the country but for some reason not in your area they may not fund it.

I'm not sure where you live but in WI you are required to show proof of income. It may not be a national requirement but the WIA (Workforce Investment Act) states that priority will be given to low-income individuals and those receiving public assistance.

I need to know if I tell the WIA program that I need help with paying my rent, they are saying that they will produce a check payable to the landlord, not me. So, if that happens my landlord will see that payment come in and question me as to why this program is paying for my rent and not me (which I have been since I had money and now I have run out money and I am unemployed). My landlord does not know that I am unemployed. I am afraid if they find out that I am unemployed when they receive the check from the WIA program, they can give me a notice to move out (since we are on a month to month lease - either party can give a 30 day notice for move-out). We would not know where to move if this happens. I am wondering if I should borrow money from family members to pay for February rent or take the risk of getting a notice to move-out because of the WIA paying for rent and the landlord finding out that I am unemployed. Can anyone give me an advice?
