What is recommended for a new LVN to start working in?

Nurses LPN/LVN

Published

I just graduated last Friday, don't have my license yet, until probably February 2015. I was thinking about working as a graduate vocational nurse, but I'm not sure where to start applying/working. I have no medical experience, only clinicals that I had in school. Thank you for any advice you all might give.

Is it recommended to work or not work as a GVN while studying for NCLEX?

Congrats on graduating!

I would devote my time to studying if at all possible, until you pass the NCLEX. I don't know about working as a GVN, however I did work as a nursing assistant (non licensed or certified) while I was in school. Maybe you could try nursing homes and hospitals and see if they have those? Good luck!

As an inexperienced new grad, do not be too selective regarding where you will and will not work. Other new nurses have made this mistake and ended up unemployed for longer than they had ever bargained. Look into nursing homes, hospice, home health, private duty, psychiatric facilities, and specialty hospitals (Kindred, Triumph, Vibra, HealthSouth, Reliant, etc).

If you do not have an urgent need for the money, I would advise you to pass NCLEX prior to hunting for a job. A valid nursing license number is a powerful bargaining chip in the job hunt. Good luck with whatever you decide.
