LVN/LPN to BSN

Nurses LPN/LVN

Published

Hi I am currently an LVN working on an oncology unit fulltime while going to school fulltime to obtain my BSN. I love what I do and am really enjoying my classes at the university. However, it does seem that what I see in day-to-day practice doesn't always jive with the lessons in class. This can be a bit confusing at times......anyone else in the same boat?

The textbook world of nursing (read: classroom lessons) is never going to 'jive' with the real world of nursing (read: our day-to-day practice).

The textbook world of nursing is always operating under the assumptions that the nurse has an unlimited amount of time, that the facility is fully staffed, that the facility has an everlasting budget, is fully stocked with supplies, and that the interdisciplinary team actually works as a team.

Unfortunately, you and I know these things are not always made into realities.

I am sure that you noticed the same when you graduated from LPN school and started working...it will not change because your level of knowledge will be increasing. Are you a new nurse? Many new grads that have had no previous experience working in the medical field feel the same; bewildered that nothing is what they promised in school. School is a place where you are prepared to sit for NCLEX (hopefully), but was never geared to the real world, especially these days.
