Are LPN's being phased out?

Nurses LPN/LVN

Published

I know people have been saying for years that everyone would need a BSN and LPN's would be a thing of the past, etc. Well, so far, where I work (a large, magnet hospital) there are still many, many nurses without a BSN -but there are veeery few LPN's. I attended a meeting last week where my supervisor was lecturing RNs about signing off on LPN's charts and she mentioned that there are very few LPN's and even mentioned that some of those LPN's are about to graduate to be RN's. I overheard other RNs in the cafeteria complaining about LPN's basically saying, "what's the point when we have to go behind them."

They are definitely being phased out where I work. They aren't hiring LPN's anymore although the ones who are there aren't getting fired or anything. What is it like where you work? Do you think LPN's have a future?

Thank God someone said that-gd for you. Where are you and what area are you working in and HUGE CONGRATS. See LPN hired in a hospital :)

And I said that it depends and will ALWAYS depend on where you live

muffylpn, I tried to email you, but the email address didn't work. Anyway, I just wanted to know if RAM said that they still take LPN's as volunteers? Did they specify that in their email to you?

I think a "u" br accident got in there

Within 70 miles of my home town, there are 6 hospitals, None hire LVN's now, Im forced into Home Health for work

I have moved to get employment I want.

Specializes in Psych, LTC/SNF, Rehab, Corrections.

We have some hospitals that hire LVNS in my area.

LVNs will have work. It's just not guaranteed to be in the hospital.

There's plenty of work to be found in LTCs, home health and doc offices, though.

I'm not even counting on a hospital postion - but, if I get one? Cool.

My fundamentals instructor said that the hospitals are making a big mistake by moving the LVNs out.

I've always felt that RN's hijack the term "nurse" for political purposes.

There will always be jobs for LVN's in the areas where it is not feasible for RN's to be such as hospice, home health, private duty, assisted living, LTC etc.

The problem is when the training doesn't match the intended job. I trained as an LVN in Los Angeles a few years ago entirely in the acute hospital setting except for 6 weeks in the LTC in the first term. While I loved my experience and learnt a lot it didn't train me for the jobs I would end up taking. I would have been better served by say having a few weeks doing home visits.

Now it's always hard to tell what direction a career path will go in when your in the middle of a economic mess. Right now there is an excess supply of nursing labor and an infinite pool of nursing students.

Hospitals don't want to have to train their staff at all and just want to hire experienced staff but this is the same everywhere. My husband works in logistics and his company always used to be willing to train workers with promise now they just want to hire those who can work right out of the gate. Why? Because they can. Excess supply.

It'll be interesting to revisit this thread 5 years from now and see what actually happens.

Andrea u r all set RAM is very sorry if u need names 2 throw around when u call again please email me ur email and I will forward the names 2 u. They would love 2 have u

Hi muffylpn, thanks so much. I appreciate you standing up for your fellow LPN's... :) I will email you, thanks! I am looking forward to working with RAM again... I really enjoyed it before.

They did the same thing in ontario....now the BSN is the entry level into nursing...there is no longer a diploma nurse....te diploma RN was replaced by the registered practical nurse...that is to say you once went to college for 3 years to become an RN and 2 years to become a registered practical nurse....now you go to scholl 3 years to become a registered practical nurse (there curriculum is exactly the same as the former RN diploma nurse curriculum ). You can't work in a hospital as and RPN, but you can work in a long termcare facility, hospice etc. In Michigan a very prominent hospital is in fact phasing out LPNs...they are not hiring them anymore....I currently do my clinicals at this hospital and my clinical instructor runs one of there nursing departments...the memos have been sent, the meetings have resovled....the result equals. LPNs are truly being phased out. As a future ADN graduate the only departments still hiring ADNs is the emergency Department and longterm care....I want critical care and to qualify for that at this hospital I will need a masters degree: ) I'm cool with that...I lanned on getting my masters anyway

Everything goes in phases. Until they close LPN schools-we will exsist and have jobs.

Yeah the economy won't stay sour forever. Even in my lifetime I've seen the ups and downs
