Looking to become LPN and specialize

Nurses LPN/LVN

Published

Hello there.. new to comment. i have been reading blogs on here for about a year now.. okay lets get started.

I am currently a C.N.A. who up untill recenlty had NO interest in becoming a nurse. The only reason I am more incline to it now is i LOVE WOUND CARE. i joined the wound care team at the hospital i work in, and recently found out i can specialize in wound care as a nurse. I really only want to go for my LPN to do so.... My question is..

Is it worth it?? iam in the southeat michigan area!!! ANY THOUGHTS, COMMENTS, QUESTIONS are welcome.

THANK YOU

Specializes in LTC,Hospice/palliative care,acute care.

I know some LPN's who have become certified and work in a local wound care center ,several of my co-worker's are on our nursing home's wound care team and pursuing certification.Large facilities will have these teams. Look at the facilities in the area where you live. But why stop there? Acute care in most areas and even many LTC's are going RN/BSN.Your options will be unlimited.

Specializes in Adult ICU/PICU/NICU.

Get your BSN if this is possible as it will give you the most options. In my day, LPNs could work in many areas. These days the options are more limited and with the number of for profit nursing schools popping up everywhere, there is no nursing shortage. The BSN is quickly becoming the standard entry into nursing in acute care and perhaps in other areas of nursing once these jobs become scarce.

Specializes in Case mgmt., rehab, (CRRN), LTC & psych.

In the metro area where I currently live and work, many LPNs/LVNs are employed as wound care nurses for nursing homes, hospices and home health companies.

Specializes in Psych, LTC/SNF, Rehab, Corrections.

You can wound care if you like. Its a certification.

There are plenty of lvns doing wound care in the nursing homes. If not, just ask the DON if theyd be interested in a wound care only nurse. It helps everyone on the floor.

Please, do not say" I really only want to go for my LPN to do so...." because when you earn your LPN and you hear comments from other medical professionals refer to you as "you're just the LPN, where is the nurse", you will not feel very happy about it. So please respect the title before you earn it.

I'm sorry you don't feel respected being a nurse. I'm an AIDE!!!! The lowest of the low working in long term care and the hospital... I don't get respected by even lpns So yes I would like to further my education for my family by doing what I love!!!! Wound care!!

Yes there is a woud care facility I've had my eye on!! I will defiantly look into that. Thank you. I've always said if I wen for nursing I would go all the way bsn. It is still an option. For short term goal, I feel this will be the best for my family at the time.

If you are looking to go for your LPN I would say do so. You could do wound care specializing in the hospital setting but these are usually taken by someone who has been there forever. Don't let that discourage you though, go for it if that is what you want to do.

Homecare is another option. If you go this route there are many good resources to prepare yourself such as Understanding OASIS and Home Health Teaching Tools available for very little money on Ebay.

Good Luck!

THANK YOU UORN..
