I'M CONFUSED: Is HESI mandatory for NY State NCLEX?

Nurses LPN/LVN

I've been getting mixed responses. My school (which was in NJ) says I must take the exit exam. But they do not say anything about NY state laws. Some people in NY are telling me that it isn't..but the people that tell me aren't nurses.

So I wanted to ask anyone here who can help me out I'd appreciate it greatly!

not sure but I am in NJ and at my school we took the exit test but basically because they wanted to keep track of how we were doing,we did 5 Hesi exams that the school choose and the last was a mix of all subjects, but I didn't think it was mandatory to graduate or even take NCLEX ,people did 600 to 1000 for scores, mine were 900's.

now waiting to sit for NCLEx:yeah:

Im in Alabama and it probably is totally different from NY, but taking the HESI was a requirement to completing the nursing program. We were required to take it until we made at least 850 on the test, or up to 3 times, whichever happened first. If you did not pass the third time supplemental classes would be offered to help you prepare for the upcoming NCLEX.

If the school requires HESI before they will graduate you then you have no choice to do it as they will not release your transcripts which you will need for licensure application and to sit the NCLEX

The thing is you can't send them if that is what you are thinking. Any transcripts has to go directly from your school or at least you can collect and send but must be in a sealed envelope with the school stamp.

I am hearing that more schools in New York are requiring the HESI exam now moreso than they did in 2005/2006. As SilverDragon stated, you cannot graduate, nor will your transcripts be sent to the BON until you complete ALL program requirements.

Most schools want you to take an exit exam so they'll know how you'll do on the NCLEX. I'm from NY and I did not take a HESI but the school had their own exam and they would not send the transcripts until we took the exam. I'm not sure about this but the a friend of mine called the Dept of Ed and they told her that only transcripts mailed directly from the school were accepted.

Good luck though.

thank you...that's the same deal with my school. I guess i'll be taking the HESI!

You'll do fine, they won't prevent you from taking the NCLEX, but it'll give you an indication of your chances of passing the nclex. my school would not issue the transcripts unless we scored a 80% probability of passing.

It can prevent then from sitting NCLEX if the school will not send a completed set of transcripts then the BON will not give the OK to sit the exam. Have seen someone post that they are having big issues because they failed HESI 3 times (well only took twice and failed to show up on third) and school refused to send transcripts enabling them to apply and take exam.
