Got hired one day and fired the next

Nurses LPN/LVN

Published

I currently work at my job as a nurse assistant and was told that when I passed my boards that I would get a position as a LPN. Well, a few days ago, I was on the unit with my work done until rounds with NO CALL LIGHTS GOING OFF AND NO RESIDENTS UP so I made a call home to check on my son; KEEP IN MIND THAT IS 8:30-9:00 AT NIGHT, and the administrator walks up to me when I finished my call and said I shouldn't make personal calls on the unit (which I fully know better) and with NO ATTITUDE, I told her I understand and let the situation go since IT WAS AN ISOLATED EVENT FOR ME. A couple of days later I had an interview with the DON for the LPN position and she offered me one. THE VERY NEXT DAY, she told me that she had to withdraw the offer because of what happened with the phone a few days before. SHE WENT ON TO STATE THAT " YOU ARE A VERY GOOD RA( RESIDENT ASSISTANT/NURSE ASSISTANT) BUT, She (the administrator) is holding the nurses to a higher standard of professionalism than RA's. She (DON) went on to say "Don't get upset, but use this as a tool for growth for wherever you go" ( I never was upset, I actually was very calm). I asked her if this incident was REALLY THE REASON why she was withdrawing the offer and she said "YES." During our conversation I NEVER GOT A WRITE UP FOR THE INCIDENT OR A VERBAL COUNSELING SHEET FOR ME TO SIGN INDICATING THAT THIS WASNT A WRITE UP! Now, with that said, I have only been working there for about 8 weeks and in that time I have NEVER BEEN LATE, I CALLED OFF ONCE (ONLY TO TAKE MY NCLEX-PN ASAP) AND I HAD ONE VERBAL COUNSELING FOR NOT DOING AN INSERVICE POSTED. What she never elaborated on was why they didnt want a good RA to become a good LPN. I STILL HAVE MY JOB AS A RA. I AM A AF. AM. FEMALE. There are ONLY 4 AF.AM. NURSES that work there and THEY ALL WORK AT NIGHT. I have a strong belief that my race could be a factor. I go to work and do my job to the fullest everyday! So, I really dont understand but what I do understand is that I AM BEING USED BY MY JOB ESP. SINCE THEY NEED NURSE ASSISTANTS ON MY SHIFT BADLY (3-11). Sorry this is so long, I just need some opinions from others to maybe see another point of view.

It's okay Carrie. Im personally not worried about it at all. When I was at work this evening, 3 of the day nurses came rushing to our unit about some issues with another nurse and the narcotic book. Seems as like one of the facility's NEW HIRES (Seasoned Nurse) has been forging 2 other nurses signatures on multiple narc sheets. I watched as the nurses went through the book pointing out the forgeries and to make matters worse, that same nurse came down no more than 15 minutes later looking in that same book and then took out some sheets and went into the unit kitchen, what she did I don't know, but she put the sheets back and went on her way. Plus, I found out today that another nurse is being watched or accused of the same thing. So Im glad this has happened b/c that just proved to me that Whetstone is not the place for me and as soon as I can, Im outta there!

brown eyed girl, you are better off w/o the lpn position at that one facility. good luck!

I BET THEY DO TOO! No one can tell me different. The only difference is that THEY HAVE THEIR OWN PRIVATE OFFICE WITH THEIR OWN PHONES AND COMPUTERS.

Several years ago, when I was job hunting, the nursing shortage wasn't too bad here, but it was very hard to find NA's. I would get numerous calls to go to work as a NA, but not as a nurse. Alot of them said, once an LPN position came open I would be considered for it. I was doing agency and getting alot of work so I would say NO Thanks. Sounds to me like they just need to keep you as a CNA. Go find a nursing job somewhere else, you worked for it! Good Luck!

I've got an interview with a home care agency doing a pediatric case on Wednesday, so hopefully it goes well.

On nights we don't really take our breaks. If I'm working my 3rd 12 hour shift in a row, you bet your butt I'm going to call home and touch base, b/c the nights I work I don't see my older son in the mornings, nor at night b/c of his activities. So yeah, if I go 3 days w/o seeing him, I'm going to call during my shift. We all do that, and I never give my aides any grief about it, as long as they keep it short. We always need good aides, so I think you need to treat them with respect and let some of the minor little things slide sometimes.

Good luck with your interview.

you need to get out of there...working as an ra now p you have passed boards is a waste of time

go where you can learn your craft and gain confidence..don't look for discrimination, it may just be ignorance
