Don't know what to do about job offer.

Okay..here goes..

I interviewed for a allergy nurse position almost two weeks ago on Wednesday. The doctor said I was well qualified for the position, talked salary/hours, and copied my LPN license. He asked me to call him with the info for my references. I called him the next day with the reference info and left a message. I checked with the reference a few days ago and she said he had contacted her. So, I know he was interested enough to copy my license and call my references. However, I did not hear from him all week last week. So, I called him today (Monday) and left a message with his secretary. I said I was still interested in the position and was wondering if it had been filled and blah blah.

Then I got a call from another doctor I interviewed with for a pediatric nurse position a few days ago. He left me a voicemail to call him back so I'm thinking he will probably offer me the position. This is great, but I would rather have the allergy position as it is better hours, location, and pay.

Should I wait to see if the allergy doctor calls me? Why would he copy my license unless he thought he'd need it on file? I don't want to leave the pediatric doctor hanging or lose my chance.

Any help would be greatly appreciated!

I would accept the first offer that comes in. You might wind up not having a job at all. At least, that's what I would do. I live in Los Angeles and jobs are hard to come by.

If you hold out for everything, you'll end up with nothing.

Accept the job you've been offered. Until the allergy doctor calls back (and he might never call back), you have nothing. The pediatric position is a solid offer.

Doesn't hurt to try but this what I would do. When you get the official offer from the other company I would then call back the job you really want and simply say. "I wanted to follow up with you regarding this position and to see if it were still available. I have been offered a position someplace else but my heart is really in this position so I wanted to reach out one last time to see if it is available". If they can't give you the position right then and there then take the other job.

With the job market being so awful in Los Angeles I would take what you can get and not pass up the other job. I have found that in Los Angeles employers are really holding applicants over a barrel simply because they can. They are in no rush to give someone an offer because there are hundreds of other people who are lined up right behind you ready to snatch up that job.

the question is are you financially secure enough to take chances

or do you need a job right now

Well guys, thanks for the replies. I took the pediatric job because you were all right, better to have a job than nothing at all and the allergy doctor never called. I went today to shadow..and they sent me home early. The doctor said he would call me later to talk about the day. I saw when I got home they reposted the position on Craigslist. I am so mortified and have no idea what I did wrong. I was SO friendly and helpful. I was only shadowing so I couldn't take on any responsibilities. The LPN training me left me alone for an HOUR in the receptionist area to stare at a desk. She said she would be "right back" and never came back. Then the doctor came in and said I could leave early when I was supposed to shadow all day. I guess he'll call me later to tell me I wasn't a good fit. What a disappointment life can be sometimes.
