Quick question....
I know this must sound weird... But is there a way to get a psych tech license when you already have a LVN license??
The reason I ask is because I work at a prison.. The LPTs get paid a $1000 more than the LVNs.. Crazy right!! Plus when the LPTts are short staffed..us LVNs have to go cover there lines... But they are not allowed to cover ours..
Anyways..thats why I'm asking if we can & how to get a LPT license so I can apply for that position at the prison as well....

Yes, you can become a psychiatric technician by graduating from a state-approved program and passing the licensure exam. There are no shortcuts or bridge programs from LVN to psychiatric tech of which I'm aware, although I might be incorrect.

You can certainly become a psych tech and still be an LVN. You never give up your previous licensing in order to add to your credentials. Still they may still ask you to function as an LVN in your current setting and will always be held to the standard of scope of your highest level of training and licensure. Why not just become a nurse specialized in the psych? If you decide to go for your RN I can guarantee you a job as a psych nurse will never be boring.
