Working as an RN on CPT while doing MSN.

I am an international graduate student doing MSN with NP specialty. I will finish my 1st year of MSN in May 2014. I am wondering if it is possible for me to work as RN on CPT after completion of first year (I have an US RN license). I read on my university website that the work on CPT must be related to your course of study. Is working as an RN while doing NP are considered related? I want to stabilize myself economically and gain US RN experience.

I don't see a problem with it. RN experience will contribute to your NP education.

I would suggest checking with your student adviser.... My understanding is CPT must be in your field of study and the school approved to offer CPT as it is classed as a type of internship

  • CPT must relate to your major and the experience must be part of your program of study.
  • When you enroll at the graduate level, your designated school official (DSO) may authorize CPT during your first semester if your program requires this type of experience. Ask your DSO for details.
  • Your DSO will provide you a new Form I-20, “Certificate of Eligibility for Nonimmigrant Student Status,” that shows that the DSO has approved you for this employment.
  • You can work on CPT either full-time or part-time.
  • CPT requires a signed cooperative agreement or a letter from your employer.
  • If you have 12 months or more of full-time CPT, you are ineligible for OPT, but part-time CPT is fine and will not stop you from doing OPT.

Pretty sure that you'll have no problem working as a RN on your CPT. RN is sort of a midway product of your NP program. So it qualifies for the "related filed" requirement. However, if you do full time CPT for too long, you might lose your eligibility for OPT. and OPT is a very nice thing to have if you are planning on finding a job in the US after graduation.

Thanks for your reply. I talked with my international coordinator and she told me that if I work on CPT for less than 12 months, I will still be eligible for OPT. But she wasn't sure that how exactly they count these 12 months (semester wise or exact dates). I am planing to stay on CPT on 16th May 2014 to 30th April 2014. I hope I will not eliminate my OPT by doing this.
