US student nurse wants summer experience in UK

Hello everyone!

This is actually my first post on allnurses.com, I have been reading posts on this site for about one year. Anyway, I was wondering if all of the UK nurses could help me out with something. I am a second semester sophomore in a 4 year nursing program in California. I want to work in London over the summer of 2006. It has been difficult for me to find the right information on what I am looking for, it seems like if you are not a RN it may be hard to find a job. I was thinking I could work as a healthcare assistant or nursing auxilliary. Do you think I should contact the HR departments at the hospitals directly? Or do you think I should get a nursing internship? The problem with the internships is that they are usually unpaid. If any of you have ideas as to what I should do, please let me know! Thanks for your time!

hi and welcome :)

The biggest problem will be getting a work permit and unfortunately you may find it very difficult to get one especially if you are wanting to work within the health setting.

wish you all the best

You will not be able to get a work permit to work as a Health Assistant, etc.

The only way that you can get a visa to work in a reasonable amount of time is with an RN after your name.

You may be able to get a guest student visa for the summer semester, but this would not permit you to work, and you would have to be a registered student.

You would probably be able to get a job working in a pub, every where i go these days there seems to be Aussies, New zealanders and other overseas young people working behind bars. I think you may be able to do this as a traveller/student.

Commonwealth country's citizens under a certain age can usually work temp jobs under the working holiday scheme (lots of my Canadian friends worked in pubs and the like with Aussies and Kiwis). I don't know if the US has a similar arrangement with the UK or not, but it may be something to look into.

The US doesn't have the same arrangement with the Commonwealth countries.
