Uk nurse to ontario, anything I can from UK

Hi, first post so please be gentle :) I have been lurking here and other forums for several months and been gathering as much information as I can myself without asking repeated questions that you must see a lot.

I am a Uk trained RN (adult) and have my BSc, I have been qualified for 8 years now and have various post grad certificates.

I am aware that in order to gain registration as a nurse in ontario I will more than likely have modules to make up as I do not meet the paeds/mental health/obgyn requirements.

I have spoken with several colleges who offer the bridging course for IENs and I have been informed that in order to gain a place on one of these courses I need a completed assessment letter from The college of nurses of ontario.

Having read several threads I have noticed that assessment from CNO can take several months to the year. I was wondering if I am able to apply for assessment from the UK so that I am able to apply to commence the bridging course on arrival to canada? Do I need to have my visa before applying to CNO?

We are a family of 4, 2 kids aged 8 and 4, my husband is a barber (aware that he also will have tests to sit) and therefore arriving and waiting several months to even gain a place on a bridging course is something I would rather avoid for financial reasons I would prefer to continue working as a nurse here in the UK and do as much as I can from this end?

Is this possible?

Financially we will be a position to have enough funds behind us to support us for the several months and will be open to any employment opportunities however having the kids I would prefer to do as much in the UK as I can, of course if this is not possible then we will move over and start the ball rolling on arrival.

We are applying for a permanent residency visa.

What's with people and Ontario? The job market is truly lousy unless you are extremely specialized. ICU and the OR are two specialties that will find you work in any province.

Ontario only because of many friends there however we are open to any province, work comes first, no work then no money. Do you feel any province has a higher demand for nurses than another? I have ICU experience. Thanks

The job markets in AB, BC, and ON truly are terrible. There have been lay offs and bumping. Government cuts to healthcare. Housing is expensive and in low supply in major cities.

There is work in smaller towns and in rural areas. Don't think Hampshire/Yorkshire rural, think small town Canada.

When jobs are available in major cities, there are often 60+ internal applicants for the position. My unit had over 65 applications for a part time position that was going to last six months. A maternity leave coverage (1 year) had over 80.

Fort Mac usually has vacancies (I'm in AB) but there are reasons, high cost of living, few rental units available for housing, high addiction rates, and it's a one industry town that is accessible by air or a two lane highway for most of the way that you share with huge trucks.

Vancouver, Edmonton, Calgary, Toronto? High housing costs, underemployed local nurses. Provincial governments that cut healthcare spending and don't really care about staffing needs.

Thank you for your reply. We will be heading more rural, friends around the Amish/Mennonite areas of Ontario and will be open to most rural areas as city living does not appeal to me. Hoping to have visa finalised and move over around start of 2016.

Most IEN's have been required to do some catch up courses and my understanding is they can only be taken with the approved establishments and you will probably do the NCLEX by the time everything gets sorted and you meet requirements. Expect the CNO process to take over 12 months as a rough guide and that is everything moves smoothly

Thankyou silver dragon, are you aware if I can apply to CNO whilst in the UK so I can therefore continue nursing here whilst awaiting the 12months or so for their decision? Once they have assessed my application We could then move over so I can complete any courses/modules required to 'fill the gaps'.

The rural areas of Ontario are no better in terms of nursing jobs. Massive cuts mean the smaller hospitals are getting rid of staff not hiring.

Yes you can start the process with CNO before arriving in Canada
