I just spoke with an old friend. I asked her regarding the agency they applied. I didn't bother applying on that agency. It's like something is stopping me from doing it.

I asked her about the process on the agency. She said that they'll be having a student visa when going there. I was shocked because most of the people I know left for Albeta with a working visa. This is the first time I heard of an agency offering a student visa going to Canada but end up working while studying. Just like in UK.

Anybody heard of this? I'm really curious!

There are restrictions on study in Canada and to work they still have to apply for a work visa even if they are on a study visa plus they have to maintain full time study. Not sure what they are bringing them over on a study visa for when really with perseverance can be sorted before they arrive in Canada although may have to do SEC before they will be allowed to sit CRNE

hi lenjoy, i saw an ad just like this...i was planning to visit their office but something happened...anyway cud you ask your friend about the name of this agency...tnx...

What my source told me that if ever they'll undergo the sec assessment, they'll be working at the same time. It's kinda a strange though because most of the people I know have a work visa.

Sorry, but in most cases what they are going to be doing is not considered legal for there. As a full-time student and that is what is required for the student visa, then there is no way that they are going to be able to support themselves on that as well.

Something is quite fishy to say the least. And there is no way that this wonderful agency can guarantee that they will be able to remain there when they finish this so-called training or working period.

Big mistake by going this route. Just another company trying to bend the rules.

It's a good thing I didn't fall for their offer. Thanks suzanne and silverdragon!

In my opinion sorting things out for Canada can easily be done on it's own. Yes you may have to do SEC, I may have to do SEC and I have over 20 years experience but if it needs doing then it needs doing. However I am luck that I am already in Canada so the cost isn't as much but I have seen nurses from the UK have to travel to Canada to do SEC. It all goes on transcripts.

Hi I am applying for student visa too in Alberta. Here are some information that I know and hopefully will help. Student visa restricts the holder to work outside the school campus for the first 6 months. You can work inside the school premises if the college or university is publicly funded, if it's a private institution I think it should be accredited with Canadian government. After 6 months you can apply for an outside the campus work permit. But work is still restricted, because there are maximum no. of hours for a student to do a part-time job. ( In my opinion they do this to prevent students from losing their focus in their studies, please remember that the aim is to study and not to work.)

Additional information that may help, colleges or universities in Canada is very expensive. It can cost from CAD 8,000- 16,000 per annual for international students (cost affects the school, province and program enrolled). Schools have different terms of payment like in Mount Royal College in Calgary Alberta, they want the tuition to be paid on an annual basis not per semestral. Other's want it paid per semestral but letter of acceptance is not given until you are paid for the 1st sem. ( The risk involve in that mode of payment is during this time you do not have a student visa yet, but you have to pay them the tuition for the letter to be issued --- that said document is not a guarantee for you to have a student visa you must still persuade the immigration officer that you will comeback after your studies) Anyways, you can still refund the enrolled amount but not all of it, it depends in the policy of the institution.

If you are a registered nurse ( international graduate), you can apply for a nurse equivalency program in Bow Valley College, (please note this is for LPN). It's like a bridging program in someway and at the same time you will take the subjects that they deemed you need to take. To be an LPN in alberta, you should contact first norquest or Bow Valley College they will be the one who will assess your transcripts.

If it's Carna that you are applying you still need to take SEC and the nurse bridging program in Mount Royal college or Grant Mc Ewan College.

Process is expensive, it can cause depression to you and your family because of the uncertainties it makes. Nevertheless, if ones perseverance is strong no wall can hinder him/her to the end of the road.

If you want to know the other details just pm me if you think I could help

Thank you very much for the detailed information. I'm just worried because that is the route my friends is taking. My aunt's friend owns the agency and just wondering why take that path if you can find a way to have a working visa. They kept on saying that you can work at the same time while undergoing this program. I already warned them that student visa gives you limited access on working in Alberta. anyway... thanks for the info...

Hello there,

i have here some questions regarding the student visa option...

1. If ever there are competency gaps seen in an IEN's application like for example in Medical-Surgical nursing, will additional courses be required?

2. Are the courses available at Mt.Royal University? How much does each course cost? Is it similar to the Bridging Program offered by the said university? How long will it take the applicant to complete the course? Can the applicant assume part-time nursing jobs to compensate for the tuition fee costs of the course?

I have been checking the Mt. Royal University website but I don't see any information about my query.

3. After passing that course can the applicant already take the CRNE?

Thanks.

Alberta is pretty much closed to IENs. AHS the main employer has frozen hiring for the last year.

The two year contracts of IENs are beginning to terminate this month. I've heard of several nurses in Edmonton being positionless as their positions are not being renewed.

If you are looking for an educational experience you may be in luck but if you are looking for work there isn't much hope.

Locally educated nurses are having a hard time finding work. Less than 40% of last year's RN and PN graduates found employment.
