RN in HK planning to work in new york

hi all here,
i'm a RN from HONG KONG with over 5 years experiences working in ICU and OPERATING THEATRE. i'd like to ask what should i do if i want to work in new york city. since i read some forums here said that working in nyc needs more further trainning and experiences, is that true? just want to confirm what kind of trainning i need there.....is it the one they mention in the website of NY BON , infectious control and child abuse tranning course? i've gone to read the NY BON website, they said i need the EDUCATIONAL CREDENTIALS VERIFIED BY CGFNS........what is it CEV? therefore, i dont need to take CGFNS if i want to take the NCLEX in NYC, right?:uhoh21:
after i passed the NCLEX in NYC, what should i do next? i really need some informations and advice from here since i couldnt find any agencies in HK which can help me to do all the processing and application for me............

I would suggest a read on here as it is very hard to get a hospital to petition for GC in NY currently. You do not need CGFNS exam for NY but do need to go through CVS. You are applying for licensure and once NY BON accept you application they will give the OK to sit NCLEX. That is the time to register with Pearsonvue and make arrangements to sit the exam. Usually takes NY BON just over 7 months to give the OK. It is taking about 8 months just to get the CVS done for NY currently.

The issue with NY is that there are many people that wish to work there and most facilities do not want to wait for the immigration processing. It is easier to get a job there if you already have a green card in hand; without it and it will be hard to get. Even with experience in the OR and ICU, the experiences in your country, as well as language can make it harder for you. Instruments have many different names than what you are used to, plus the American idioms that are used.

Have you taken the English exams as of yet? Also suggest that you do not start looking for a job until you have taken and passed the NCLEX exam............most will not even be interested in speaking to you until then. They cannot start anything as far as immigration until you have passed that exam.

thx for ur attention and quick replies ANNA and SUZANNE ,but i really want to move and work there........im not in a hurry to go there....the CVS processing time is a bit long, but i think i can wait........i also want to ask if i want to work in the OT there in NYC, do i need to get another OT lisence or special trainning which organised by the US hosp. there? that means what i have to do is apply for the CVS programme of NY from CGFNS org. and wait for the result and then apply for the NCLEX of NY BON,right? i just applied for the CGFNS certification programme...and waiting for the ATT....if i also want to apply for the CVS, can i ask the CGFNS to transfer my transcript and the lisence verification of my country to the CVS programme?? what should i do if i can do that?? how much do i need to pay to them and where can i get the form for that request??

They may not recognise your OT qualification and will probably need to go through the BON and see if they will recognise it. If you have applied for CES and want to change to CVS you may have to pay again but check out their website http://www.cgfns.org All forms and prices are on there. As stated NY hospitals are not really petitioning anyone for GC so you may have to think about going elsewhere to start with and evenutally aim for NY

There are a few threads discussing this but to be honest a lot depends on where you want to live. The reason I say this is some states do their own assessments, others require CGFNS exam (not many now but still a couple about) while most accept CES from CGFNS. Regardless of which state you initially go with if you decide to live in another you will have to meet requirements of foreign trained nurse regardless on endorsement. For example if you do your initial application with CA and pass NCLEX you will not receive you license without supplying SSN but instead receive a letter stating you meet requirements and then a license will be issued once you are in the US with a valid work permit and receive your SSN. But if you then decide to go to AZ you have to apply for license and arrange CA to pass on your NCLEX results but also go through CES with CGFNS because CA does their own assessment.

The CGFNS Certification program is completely useless for you, will not help you in anyway. No reason to go thru it. You only need to go thru the CVS process.

As a foreign trained nurse it is hard to get petitioned by a hospital in NY in any capacity, more so directly for the Operating Room, especially when there are significant differences in language. Even just an example here, OT which is operating theatre in your language and that of other countries means Occupational Therapist in the US. Add a mask onto someone's face, and then communication makes it that much harder.

CGFNS will be unable to transfer any of the documentation that you sent to them for the CVS. One of the requirements of that is CGFNS must obtain the documents themselves and they cannot accept anything that they did not ask for in advance. That is a specific requirement for NY, CGFNS just completes it for them.

Hospitals are more interested in your training in the US, most will not accept training done out of the US for this. Even as foreign nurse, you will need to start from Day One in the OR and then advance as they assess your skills. But it is going to be difficult to get a facility to petiton you, it is definitely not going to be easy for NY.
