hi there, anyone taking their rn online in canada? i am an LPN here in British Columbia looking at going on to

do my registered nurse but contemplating on taking it in classroom or online. Any input would be great from others that have any experience negative or positive to share in my decision making. I know that through the athabasca university online i need to be an LPN from alberta. Any b.c. lpn's taking this program through athabasca? Looking forward to hearing from you all. Thanks.

I am RPN rom brampton and just got a full time job after 1 yr. struggle, also taking bridging course to RN from cetennial but thinking about Athabasca Univ. too bcoz I don't wanna lose my job , will call univ. to know the details of the prog.

Hi rinks20120. I just registered for this program and still waiting for them to send me the package. I have three kids, my husband is also going back to school. Right now i am the only one working and can't do the traditional class room studies. Will let you know when i have more information. If you get any info, don't hesitate to let me know.

This Question is for those who have done some of the clinicals. Does the University decides where you have to do the clinicals in Alberta or the student. I live in Calgary and would like to do my clinicals here in Calgary if possible.. Has anyone done clinicals in their city here in Alberta?

Hi Kelseya thanks a lot......I just called A.U. and this lady gave me 2 numbers 780-484-8886 and 2nd no. after dialing toll free i.e 1800.... choose option 3 thn opt. 1 and ext. 6446 for all the details regarding CLINICALS and transcripts.

I work in one of Edmonton's largest hospitals. I've never seen Athabasca students in it. Everyone I know that has done the degree has had to leave home (husband, kids, etc) for a couple of weeks.

It's hard enough in Edmonton to find clinical time and enough preceptors for UofA, GMU, and Norquest's students. Athabasca seems to send you where they have preceptors willing to take students.

I am takin BScN in Ryerson (Toronto), but thinking to change the university to Athabaska. I have to work, so I would like to have more flexibility. I have to come to Alberta for one clinical practice(one month) and I have no idea how to find a place to stay. Athabaska does not help with it.

If sombody from Toronto taking Athabaska program, please contact me.

Any input from somebody taking this program would be great.

So wht are you thinking about Athabasca Uni.? Did you find out where (in alberta?) we have to go to write the Alberta licensing exam? Thanks in advance for sharing the info.

Hi rinks2010, i don't think if you have a license in Toronto, you have to write the Alberta license exams. You could just apply for Alberta LPN License. There is a new law which came out Dec 2009, called Nursing mobility accross Canada, meaning that if you have a license in one province you could transfer it to another province without taking the exams or meeting any addtional trainning. Check out the CNO website for more info. Hope this helps. I live in Calgary Alberta.

The Canadian exams are all national exams. If you pass on the first writing, you're done. You never have to write it again. You do need an Alberta license to do the Athabasca program, because your clinicals will be in Alberta (and it's the school who decided where those will be, not the student). So you apply to CLPNA for a license, pay their fees, provide the necessary documents and you'll get one.

Yes, the bridge in Alberta is tied to you having experience as a working LPN.

Yes, you do need 1700hrs ( equivallent to one year of work experience). It's one of the requirement. I haven't stated yet.
