To newly hired nurses

What's your batch and how did you get hired?

I have been jobless for almost 2 years and this is not by choice. I really want to work and learn but the state Nursing is in here in the Philippines is looking bleak day by day. I have been a volunteer and a trainee for several months now. They let me go because volunteer nurses are not allowed anymore. I really need some light here. I really want a backer because in this day and age, you wouldn't get anywhere without one. I want to word in a public hospital but I keep seeing the sign "dream on" in flashing lights. Mind you, I worked hard in college; I even graduated with honors. Sometimes, I keep thinking that I shouldn't have worked so hard because all I would need is a backer. :(

I'm from batch 2009.

Took the boards last June 2009 and passed. My surname begins with a letter from the second half of the alphabet so I had to wait for registration. By not being registered yet, I wasn't able to avail a slot for the IVT training that time because they require at least the stub of registration from PRC. (IVT and BLS are usually searched for by employers, IMO, so I decided to take them first)

Had the BLS by October 2009 followed by IVT on November. Waited for 2 months for the slot to train in a tertiary hospital. Waiting time was from Nov 2009 to January 2010. Started the training in the said hospital from mid January 2010 up til 1st week of May.

In between the duration of my duty from January to May 2010, I have submitted applications to other hospitals already so that I would already have a backfall. Tried submitting at TMC but did not know anyone from the inside. Passed an application at Quirino for the NTP and was scheduled for an exam last May 11, 2010. Passed another application at a network of local dialysis units within our area for training and was asked to report on May 11, 2010.

Chose to train at the latter because it's closer to us, and rumors say there's a possibility of hiring. Evaluation is performance based. Started my training on that same day I was asked to report. Was first shocked with the working environment but eventually got used to it. Gave myself a deadline that if I will not be hired within 6 months time, I will quit and find another. 6 months passed and I was still not evaluated. Asked permission to leave after 6 months and 3 weeks. Then poof..they offered me the job that same day. Nov _ 2010

All in all, I've done volunteer service for a year. Seems long, but I know yours is longer. No offense meant with that. I just want to say that efforts like yours will not be put to waste. Just be patient. It will come on the right place at the right time. His plans for us are better that what we are thinking. HAVE FAITH!

The great high road of human welfare lies along the path of the steadfast and the well-doing, and they, who are the most persistent, and work in the truest spirit will invariably be the most successful.

God bless us nurses!

I'm batch 2009. I started also a nurse trainee at one of the government hospital for 5 mos. While on training, I tried to pass my applications at different hospital in metro manila.. most of them are for manpooling ony. the bigger one is on freeze hiring. but i tried to pass also with the small ones so you will have a better chance in getting a job. I also have acls, bls, sfa, ivt training even nih stroke scale training.. its a mixture of determination, hardwork, hope and luck and you will find a job. I'm now an ICU nurse.

well I know some people who graduated cum laude but they still dont have work.

if you were of the top 10 in the board exam, you won't have a problem looking for work.

not really, I know a few people from top 10 who are having a hard time looking for work. most of them ended up being lecturers at review centers

Batch 2009, pretty good resume, graduated from one of the top schools of nursing in the country. Passed tons of application letters to different hospitals. I don't want to pay training fees and work without pay so I don't show up even after I pass the exams and interviews. Got a job offer from a private hospital immediately hiring me as staff nurse. Presto! I'm on med-surg now.

after how many months of trying?

Took me about 5 months of waiting. Passed 4 other exams of different hospitals.

me i turned down a private hospital that was 2 hours from our house. i know it was pretty lame of me since it's so hard to find a job these days but in the long run, i saw how the travel would affect my performance due to different reasons. i thought that i deserve the luxury of sleep as do all nurses:)
