Making up hours inorder to work in NJ, US... UK qualified nurse

Hi,

I have become incredibky frustrated by the lack of information available to me.. I am a UK qualified (Adult nurse) I have been in the process of having my credentials reviewed by CGFNS.. 9 months in I am still none the wiser..

Are there any uk trained nurses working in NJ I would be grateful to hear from someone who had make up hours i order to register with nj, and how they went about doing it... Are there any nursing schools in nj/ny that allow this?

Are you in the UK or NJ? In the UK there are no top up courses and really if in the US all you can do is contact the various schools and ask if you can join as a guest student for the required courses that you need. From what I have seen posted you may find it hard as not many schools accept guest students but require completion of full course

I am in nj. I just got my report from cgfns.. It's as if this establishment knows nothing or like wasting the applicants time and pushing them to the brim of insanity...I completed a postgraduate course as a physician assistant in the uk after my nursing degree... Cgfns insisted I get the university to submit all theoretical and clinical hours for every speciality... I wasted months doing this chasing lecturers... Now when I got the report none of that is included... Which I understood from day one as Thor hours were as a PA not a nurse... But why the heck did they insist on having all this info and wasting months of my time when none if it was going to be included... Sorry I'm venting.I think I'm going to be short onPediatrics, marernity and mental health I completed 5 hours of theory and 90 hours of practice in each of those specialities.The report from cgfns Doesent even tell me what I need to do.

Although not NJ area, I can tell you about my experience with CGFNS and relocating from the UK. I completed my DipHe in Nursing (Adult) back in 2008. Worked in theatres as a scrub nurse for 3 months after qualifying and then moved to Mississippi in the US through my husbands job. For the first year i did nothing. All the research I did on the Internet pretty much told me I had no chance of continuing my nursing career here. Not only did I specialise in adult nursing but I only had 3 months post qualification experience (it didn't look good). Needless to say, after 18 long months of going backwards and forwards with CGFNS, it turned out that I did have enough hours in the other 3 areas (just). I passed the CGFNS exam, went on to pass the NCLEX got my MS RN license and now have a full time position working in the ER at the hospital. So I just wanted to say, don't give up with CGFNS, they have the worst customer service ever but keep at them. I can't help as far as visas go because I was lucky in that I got mine through my husbands work but if you want to know about the other stuff just message me, I'll try to answer any questions.

Sorry to jump in on this thread but I am likewise wanting to relocate to NJ/NY. I grew up in America (i am a permanent resident) and completed a year of pre-requisite modules for nursing school but ended up back in england for my training. I am on the degree course for adult nursing in my final year and was hoping to relocate after a years experience in the UK. How have you satisfied the requirements for paeds, obs, and mental health? at my university we have to complete crossbranch (EU directives) essays in each of those branches but we have limited experience in practise. if you can give me any guidance that would be helpful! i'm kicking myself for doing my training in the UK thinking that I could transfer it back easily!

I am surprised you was able to get on to UK nurse training due to how the course is funded. This has been an issue for over a decade in regards UK training and not meeting US requirements. I know I met US requirements with only 75 hours both clinical and theory in Mental Health and Obstetrics. I had more than enough to meet Paeds and general Adult

It was a struggle to get fully funded but I fought quite hard. I have one more placement until I graduate so perhaps I can try to satisfy these requirements on my next one by spending days in the other areas once my learning objectives have been met? What documentation do they require to prove those hours have been completed? I had exposure to paeds on my first placement in dermatology.

somewhere i read 'city' university do the top up classes, silverdragon do you know what i can put in google to find out if there is a school i can apply to here in UK to get my top up classes. i graduate in a few months! so im looking for courses, is it called a bridging course? whats the course called, @fbull im also in final year! im doing my training in london, how about you.we have our vivars to get through and that management essay then we can relax, but since we can start applying for things id really like to start finding top up courses now, my husbands american and he really didnt want me to come back to do school here but i need to build my career.im so excited to finish,finally getting that pin after years as an HCA. really look forward to replies x

Last I knew there was nowhere in the uk to make up any hours short. One university Brighton used to do it but when retrogression occurred back on 06 they soon stopped afterwards because not worth doing

i googled the same thing myself and couldn't find much. i think the best thing to do is to try and get experience while on placement? if we plan now then i'm sure we'd be able to send ourselves off to spend days in the relevant branches! that's my plan for my last placement! i hand all my practise documents in in july so i'll have a month to kill while still in practise. i'm doing my training in plymouth at the moment-what are vivars? our management module is a presentation-not looking forward to it! we have to complete something called crossbranch or EU directives which are short essays on each branch, do you have to do that too? i thought i'd be able to use that of proof of having experience in other branches! also, the part that really annoys me is that we still have exposure to mental health and paeds in practise, even though we are adult nurses! (sorry, i just assumed you were!). congrats on nearing the completion of your course, i too am looking forward to finally qualifying! x
