Confused!!! Competancy assessment programm NZ

Hi guys!

I'm really confused about the competancy assessment programm in New Zealand. I'm a german trained nurse, pass the NCLEX RN and have over 9 years work experience on an ICU. Do I need to take the CAP, too, or only new grade nurses without enough work experience?????????????

What you need to do is apply for registration in NZ. NZNC will then assess your qualifications and your current registration. It is an advantage if you have US licence and NZNC will take into consideration your years of experience and your initial nursing qualification. NZNC will need to get transcript from the tertiary provider where you first completed your nursing studies. NZNC is the only governing body for nursing in NZ and they have the final say as to whether you need to complete CAP or not. You can try emailing them and ask them. Some years ago, I phoned NZNC about gaining registration for my sister-in-law, who completed her nursing studies overseas and NZNC was able to advise me what her chances were.

Are you aware that Australia BONs and NZNC have 'reciprocal agreement' for nurses: meaning that if you have nursing registration in Australia, you can easily apply for registration with NZNC and work in NZ and vice-versa??????;)

the CAP is for foreign-trained RNs (except aussies) and for those who've been out of the practice for more than 5 years. i've been in a class like that and i had classmates from everywhere - im from the philippines and some of them were from fiji, india, zimbabwe, israel, china etc.. there were kiwis too (they were the ones who havent been nursing for the last 5 years)

ours was only for 6 weeks but there are a lot of colleges that offer the bridging program. after you've completed the program you can then apply for your NZ license

You need to apply for the NZ licence first and then NCNZ will recommend the CAP according to their assessment. In this way also, immigration will usually allow the necessary visa for you to be in NZ to complete the prescribed CAP.

my wife will graduate (hopefully) BSN in the Philippines this march '08 and NZ is one of the countries we would like to migrate. I have some questions for you:

1. does she need a Philippine Nursing license before she can be assesed by NZNC?

2. are you a fresh graduate when you took the CAP for 6 weeks? if not, how long do you think nurses without hospital experience (fresh grads) have to take the CAP?

3. any idea on how much the CAP will cost? shall an employer pay for it or do you have to pay it on your own?

3. any idea on how much the CAP will cost? shall an employer pay for it or do you have to pay it on your own?---CAP TUITION FEE COST 3500-4500 NZD..PLUS OTHERS EXPENSES -AUTHENTICATION OF DOCS ETC ...I DONT KNOW OF ANY EMPLOYER WHO SHOULDERS CAP TUIITON FEE, I GUESS YOU SHOULD PAY ON YOUR OWN......

i am sorry for the many questions. please be patient as my wife and i really need to migrate. we have 4 kids and life has been tough for our family in the past six years thus we're the need to leave.

i have a nurse friend who is already in nz. And i am waiting now for my NCNZ approval. The 3 mos or 450 hrs requirements is not written in black and white in the ncnz website , but based on the experience of my friend and her classmates , when they registered with the ncnz , they were asked to submit a work certification that will indicate at least 450 hrs work rendered...And also it would be nice if you have sufficient work experience when you set foot in nz , since starting salary is based on work experience plus it would be an advantage when it is time to look for work.

I contacted the NCNZ. They require at least 1 year post registration experience at the time you lodge your application
