Assessment period in regards to Canada?

Nowadays, how long does it take for the assessment of IEN nursing credentials to process in ONTARIO and NOVA SCOTIA?

in previous threads, I've read from one applicant in Saskatchewan that it only took him a couple of months to be assessed. however, i learned that recently, it takes 12 months or more for Saskatchewan to finish assessing IEN credential.

So, now i am wondering if the assessment period in Nova Scotia is still the same as what they stated in their website which is 6-0 months?

I think a lot will vary depending on how timely you submit paperwork. I found NS orderly once I emailed them regarding my application because I hadn't heard anything. Took a few months but once I had a contact person I found emails answered pretty quickly.

If you are coming to NS you need to decide where you plan on living and see what jobs are available. I have seen less jobs available and a lot are so slow in replying to application. I have sent 4 resumes off to the local hospital and still waiting for a reply however I have found a job and have started working although I only started this week

I'll probably be living in Truro since that's where my cousin lives. I'm starting to consider applying for registration in NS for a lot of reasons. I don't know if you've read my posts in other threads with regards to my choices between Ontario, Alberta, Saskatchewan, and now Nova Scotia too. I've been weighing the pros and cons. So far, it's more likely for me to be on the safe side if I go for NS. Except that now I just found out from you about the difficulty in finding a job there. But then again, isn't the entire country having that problem with nurses? Is it worse in NS? Am I gonna have a better chance of finding a job elsewhere?

by the way, how many months did you wait from the day you submitted you documents to the college of nursing in NS until you got your assessment result?

Can't remember how many months I waited but think it was less than 6 months but this was after I chased them up because I hadn't heard anything. There is a new hospital being built or has just been built in Truro but you also need to think of nursing homes when looking for a job.

thank you for the info. I'm counting the months from when i will be arriving in Canada and when i will be able to take the exam. I'm planning to apply for assessment this coming September or October, the latest. I'm waiting to hear from the Canadian embassy with regards to my application. I'll be hearing from them next month whether my immigrant visa application is approved or not. If things will work out, I'll start applying for assessment.

how long is their (NS) eligibility valid for? and what months are the exam schedule in NS? IF my eligibility will expire before I'll take the exam, will there be a possibility of an extensions of my GN status until I'll take the exam (latest schedule of next year)?

The exam is sat the same 3 months every year all over Canada, for RN it is Feb, June and Oct. For NS it is held in Halifax and Cape Breton, Halifax will be nearest and easiest for you and I suggest staying in Halifax the night before because it usually starts at 8 - 8.30 am and would be a very early start if travelling from elsewhere with added worry re traffic.

Not sure on eligibility as a lot will depend on what information you provide.

You will work on a temporary license until you sit the exam

I just want to clarify if the IELTS result is needed for the ASSESSMENT process, or afterwards?

It's part of the eligibility for registration so it's required BEFORE you can take the exam.

i understand. but the assessment process will be completed even if i won't be able to submit an IELTS result yet, right?

i just want to make sure if i have to take the exam right away by next month. if it's not required for assessment, i will take it next year (after i get the assessment result). thank you.

Wrong. The IELTS result is one of the documents required by the College of Nurses in order to do the assessment of eligibility. What would be the point of giving you authorization to write the exam if they're not positive your English skills will give you some sort of chance to pass it? Have you read this information from the College of Registered Nurses of Nova Scotia: Application Process (IEN) ?

Pay attention to #6. The College of Nurses of Ontario's information section for IENs' language fluency is here: Requirement 4: Language Fluency Ontario MAY give you permission to write the CRNE without the IELTS score, but if you don't meet that standard afterward, you'll be no farther ahead because you still won't be eligible for registration.

The next sitting for the CRNE is October 6. The deadline to apply for it has passed three weeks ago. The earliest you could write is February 2, 2011.
