Hello,ALL,

I'm a foreign nurse... I just got the RN registration assessment result. It stated that I have to complete a substantially equivalant competence(SEC) foucused assessment in Obstetrics first. Does anyone know about that? How is the assessment? Anybody have gone through that? Pls give me some advice...

Thanks!

The licensing body will examine the education you received, both theoretical and clinical, as it applies to obstetrics and compare it to that received by new nurses educated in the province to which you've applied. It can be a little arbitrary, but has become necessary as the result of most provinces passing health care professionals'

acts that contain all sorts of esoteric new requirements for licensure. If your education isn't "substantively equivalent" in their opinion, they can require you to take a community college level course, including clinical, in the area that is lacking before they'll give you a license. And of course, the licensing body will charge a hefty fee for each step in the process.

Oh I just received a letter from CARNA this week too about the SEC.

I need to get in contact with the person at Mt Royal College in Calgary to arrange assessment date. Now gotta peruse every text book when i get there.

Hi, there,

Nice to hear from you! Which area do you need to be assessed? For my case, it seems that I have to complete both general assessment and specialty assessment according to the information provided by CARNA. It will take about 4 days... It's really tough I think...:( If I fail it, I'm wondering what should I do next? Go to school? ...

When will you plan to take the assessment? Good luck to you!

Have a nice weekend!

Hi there WYZQ07

Yah, I have to be assessed in Obstetrics and Pediatrics. I am really nervous about this eh.

I emailed the person and have not heard back due to possibly that its the long weekend in Canada, celebrating Canada Day. It will have to wait till i am there in Calgary, so hope to arrange it for September or October? As I am still in Australia at the moment awaiitng Permanent Residency.

I really didnt think it would come to this but I guess I was naiive. I do hope it works out, as me being assessed is tiring and stressful situation, for us all. Otherwise, I will be working as a nursing attendant and doing some other career and putting all my time and energy into doing a course in Calgary.

I guess I should have stayed in Calgary and did the nursing course there.

Keep in touch for when you will have to do your assessment. I wonder if it will be a group? Where are you residing?

;) Good luck to you too

Hi there GradRNKylie,

I'm not sure when I will go for the assessment, I just start preparing... Currently I stay at Edmonton...

All the best!

Will you be doing your assessment in Calgary at Mt Royal College?

Have you checked the OSCE skills?

Already I am doubting myself on this, the OSCE skills just remind me what I did at my university. Panic stricken, anxious, nervous.

How are you feeling about it?

I am already feeling nauseas, it seems all surreal.

:uhoh3:

I think I rather jump into doing the courses than the SEC assessment? The practical skills concerns me, especially when you cant know everything. I imagine myself just standing there, with a blank, worrying look on my face. I will be emailing CARNA about the courses?

Errrrr

I love Canada and wanna be living and working back there but at the moment my hope and passion for my goals is slowly wearing off. Plus, my husband who is Canadian wants to be living back in Calgary.

My heart goes out to you. It seems ridiculous to require pediatric content even though you never plan on working in that area. I heard of a nurse from New Zealand with many years of experience as an OR nurse being declined to work in the OR in Canada because her education from many years back lacked the equivalent pediatric content. Going back to the student mode after many years is a challenge. Good luck and hope all goes well.

I wish to find out more about Obstetrics and Pediatric assessments that are required

for RN's in Canada and what they were taught in their educational facilities. For instance, according to the MT Royal College SEC assessment for IEN's. There is a practical assessment required OSCE and if I am to be examine on a practical area of Obstetrics and Pediatrics, would that include a lady partsl examination? As I saw the link and its like OH MY GOD, no way :uhoh21::o

Hi, there,

Sorry for late reply!

I have sent two email to that lady who is in charge of this assessment, but never get reply yet. I called twice this morning, but only voice mail... Did you get your mail replied? How did she say? I was required to have a SEC focused assessment in Obstetrics by CARNA. Does it mean that I will only be assessed on that specialty? I'm not sure about that?

I think you have to borrow some books which were written by canadian authors....

Canadian fundamentals of nursing (potter & perry)

canadian medical & surgical nursing.

Good luck!

I know what you mean WYZQO7

I send emails to that lady at Mt Royal College and no reply. I really dont know what to do. I would just like to know if the practical assessment is more medical surgical or obstetrics (in which I have no idea). Its really hard and I am losing faith in all this employment decision to be an RN in Canada. In saying that I am looking at maybe just getting my qualifications recognised and doing little assessments to work as LPN.

This is a truly upsetting experience. My husband is wanting to come back to Calgary as its where he grew up. He wants life back in Canada. I want him to have that but a part of me just rather stay in Australia and work. Dont get me wrong, I wanna be in Calgary but because of this run around and nil response, has been disheartening.

Until we get replies back, get a clearer picture of what is expected then my spirits might lift up and have a big smile on my dial again.

I will keep you posted if i hear of anythign

Kylie
