28yr old want to study 4 RN-What u think?

Hello There

I started when I was 28 and now (four years later) am 2 assignments away from finishing. I too am much more of a practical person so have found the theory quite difficult at times (u just have to read some of my desperate posts to see that) and have no regrets about starting. I am an external student and the both times that I have attended clinical training blocks would say that by no means was I the oldest student attending. It is never too late to learn and I say if you are passionate about becoming a nurse then go for it! Hope this helps.

i am 31 and still taking up nursing as my second course....... and the oldest in my class is 45.......

HI. Wanted to get involved with this great site and find out what you think. I'm 28 yr old male and pursuing the idea of nursing. From what I understand everybody is getting knocked back from uni because of the entry score. I'm actually too complicated to do work experience(age and insurance) but am doing observation in May for two days at one hospital in Sydney and meeting the head nurse in charge of hiring at the Childrens hospital to see if I'm dreaming or not. My worst worry is all the studying at uni because I'm more of a practical person. UTS website says it has the most practical hands on course available, so I'm making that uni a priority( What do people think of UTS?). If any one is interseted to give me some pointers, please do. :)
Also what do you think of doing ward person work to get more hospital experince?

I just did some of my mental health placement with a student from UTS (I'm with La Trobe) and from our discussions it sounds like that course is great! Much better than the one I am doing. UTS seems to have better elective choices and a better schedule for practicals.

As for age - at 28 you'd be one of the younger ones if you were at my university. I'd say the majority in my course are 30+, with at least half being in their late 30's/40's. At nearly 35 I am a long way from being the oldest in my class!

Go for it if thats what you want :) It's a hard slog, but the time really does go quickly.

Thanks every body for all your thoughts and feeback. The support from this site is great. Next week I am doing 2 days of observation at a hospital and then after that I will make up my mind to commit to the idea.

Ps I've noticed heaps of people with a july birthday-same as mine. Cancarians are natural caring types. What do you ppl think??:)

I went to orientation at my school the other day and there were easily 5 or 6 students in their 40's. I'm 30 and have two more years to go! Good luck! You'll do fabulous! I think life experience and maturity help a lot in tough programs such as nursing!

I found the course at the University of Sydney to be *very* theoretical, and focused very much on academic rigour. If you are the sort of person who loves learning for the sake of learning and all that rubbish, then Sydney Uni is a great place to try to get into. They placed greater emphasis on teaching nursing in context with the liberal arts than some of my friends' uni's. Many students I have spoken to reported that UWS and UTS have very good curriculums that balance the theory with the practical, and I recently read a report that stated UTS offers the most amount of clinical practice time (although another one I read stated that it doesn't matter in the end because after graduation everyone is on par after a few months)...

Oh yeah, and I'm also a cancerian (on the cusp of leo...) - phreaky stuff, eh what...

I went to Uni at 50 to become an RN. Yes there is study...but plenty of support. I found Wollongong University to be the best..they are passionate about helping mature aged students be successful. I graduated 2002 with a Bachelor of Nursing degree( with distinction), I hadn't been to school for 34 years and have six grandchildren.

The practicums were great...I went straight into aged care and found this to be a fast track for my career.

Go for it...we need male nurses
