Indiana state university lvn-rn program question

Nursing Students Indiana (ISU)

Published

Im an lvn graduate. A friend of mine in california told me about an online school called indiana state university. He said that you can take an lvn to rn program. also, he told me its accredited in the state of california and can take the RN nclex afterwards. I tried to do some research and found out they have an "lvn to BS" program.

I know this may be a dumb question but does that mean the program is an "LVN to RN" program? or is it a program to be an LVN with a higher degree? I dont know exactly what an "LVN to BS" means. Also, is a BS the same exact thing as a BSN?

Also, anyone tried that school and how was it? Thank you.:nurse:

Indiana State University LVN to BSN Program - LVN to BSN or call the school. :D

a friend of mine in california told me about an online school called indiana state university. he said that you can take an lvn to rn program. true

also, he told me its accredited in the state of california and can take the rn nclex afterwards. i tried to do some research and found out they have an "lvn to bs" program. true, again.

i know this may be a dumb question but does that mean the program is an "lvn to rn" program? or is it a program to be an lvn with a higher degree? i dont know exactly what an "lvn to bs" means. also, is a bs the same exact thing as a bsn? the indiana state university in california is a partnership with isu and sanoma state university. the program is an lvn to bsn program. you enter as an advanced nursing student after you pass the 4 challenge exams. however, there are prerequisites to the program as well as prerequisites for the university. plus, you would be graduating with a bachelors degree in nursing. this means you will have to take general ed university courses, if you do not have a previous bachelors. the process sounds easy but there are requirements.

also, anyone tried that school and how was it? i am in the program, which btw isu has two programs. one program is only for calif residents and mandated by the state of california, which states that 1. the isu program must be partnered with sanoma state, 2. isu must produce clinical locations for the students (non calif states do not have this requirement and students must find their own clinical facilities), and 3. a student cannot take more than one clinical class a semeser.

above and beyond the challenge class exams, there are 6 clinical and 8 lecture classes. if one takes a clinical a semester, that means the student would graduate in 3 years if all the other classes are complete. btw if you do not have a class' prerequisites complete, you will not take any further nursing classes till that prerequisite is complete because classes are taken in sequence. the program is not a correspondence course. you will be taking a class with others, interacting with them via skype, doing group work, and will start and finish the class at a set time.

however, be aware that the isu program is more intense than regular nursing school (but as of now there is no wait list). now that i am half way thorugh the program, i would advise any calif student who is working and/or had other obligations (little ones, family obligations), that they take only one class a semester. those of us, like me, who are taking 2 classes a semester are putting in long hours of study a day just to keep up with the work. the workload can be very stressful. if i had it to do over, i would take only one class a semester, enjoy my life and time in nursing school, and graduate in a number of years. those of us who are taking 2 classes a semester are really becoming burnt and stressed out. why isu overload's its students with work (some of it is busy work), is beyond me. please understand my advice is based on fact. i have previous degrees, have good study habits, maintain a high gpa, have been in regular nursing classes, and know from which i speak.

if you are seeking an easy rn degree, it will not happen with isu. you will be trained, you will learn to research and write apa papers, do joint projects, and whip up powerpoints. if i have not scared you off, come over to the distant learning site on an. there you will find the indiana state university site, and all the others who are seeking info.

Indiana State is not really an online school, but rather a university that offers the online option for some degrees. Regarding the BS vs the BSN: The university or college makes the degree determination. All diplomas are awarded by academic degree and not by program. Many universities see the BS with a major in nursing (the degree one would earn from ISU) as a more prestigious degree than a bachelor’s degree in a specialty area. The BS degree indicates that a significant portion of course work, such as general education and cognate courses were completed in non-nursing work. (As compared to Math for Nurses or Chemistry for Nursing). Students enter the nursing major from various levels, high school, transfer, LPN/LVN, RN, and second degree, however all the students earn the same degree from ISU....whether on campus or online. With the BS with a major in nursing from ISU, one would be eligible to take the NCLEX-RN and become a licensed RN.

How can you do the pre-req science classes online? I thought you had to do labs?

Who do I contact about clinical sites in CA? I live in Fresno and want to make sure this wont be a problem

LadyinScrubs,

You have a lot of information about this program. Are you attending ISU? Do you know the tuition? I am a soon to be LVN graduate from a private school. I am aware most of the prerequisites won't transfer and I will need to retake the classes. Does ISU offer an option to take the prerequisites or do you have to take them at a CC? CC's have such a long wait list, I need a program that includes the gen ed.

Is it true that ISU is only required to place CA students in clinical sites? When did this come in effect?

The California LVN to BSN program has ended in California. There was an investigation into the quality of the program and the California program (called SSU/ISU LVN to BSN program) was found to have 6 areas of non compliance with the CA BRN and other laws within the state of California. The entire house of cards came to light when students started to complain. The CA BRN made an investigation and ISU told the Board that nothing was wrong. Student compliant closed. Then more and more student complaints arrived. First complaint reopened and the other compliants also investigated. The Calif BRN stopped the SSU ISU Calif Partership LVN to BSN program from admitting new students--as well as a few other thngs the CA BRN mandated. Eventually, the ISU program was compliant in 4 areas but the last two were the most serious and could not be fixed. At the CA BRN Board meeting on September 27th in San Diego, CA, Sonoma State and Indiana State University nursing dept admiistrators and deans, met in an open Board meeting with the CA BRN. The question to the CA BRN investigator who was investigating the SSU/ISU LVN to BSN program was: why did the Board allow ISU to continue to admit new students when there were so many non compliance issues. The investigator stated that, "ISU lied to the Board investigators."

During the Board meeting, neither SSU nor ISU mentioned that two days before the Board meeting, they were notified that the California State University Chancellor decided not to renew the interim MOU/contrat that was in place and due to expire December 31st after the January 2012 original MOU from 2007-2012 expired. The interim MOU was on its last breath when the plug was pulled September 25, 2012. The California LVN to BSN program will end December 31 and there will be no further program. Supposedly ISU is "working dilligently to obtain a new facility in California for its existing students." However, I ask, if ISU was working so dilligently to help its students, how did the nursing program end up with 6 non compliance issues in the first place AND why when the CA BRN was investigating did the ISU nursing administration lie to the CA BRN?

Stay far away from Indiana State!! i was one of the 141 students that were caught up in the mess in CA. Luckily, I was only in my first semester. The fashion in which ISU handled this situation was atrocious. It took me over 2 months to get a partial refund and I had to fight for that. They stopped returning all emails and phone calls. The administration at ISU is deceitful, and does not care about students whatsoever. STAY CLEAR OF THIS PROGRAM!!!

ISU did not return your emails or phone calls--did that give you any indication that the School is fradulent? Since you were in the first semester, you did no clinicals. You have not been declared by the CA BRN as practicing nursing without a license because as a student who was not in concurrent didactic and clinicals, the nursing student exemption that covers nursing students in clinicals did not apply. Thanks to ISU's fraud, mismanagement, and malfeasance, ISU put all those students who took clinicals which were not concurrent, the students are at risk for a misdemeanor.

Now ISU is attempting to do the same with another California university nursing school. Iwould imagine that the California BRN will check everything ISU submits because ISU lied and mislead the Board--according to the BRN. California State Universities will have nothing to do with ISU. Possibly some private school who may wish to link with ISU because the distant learning nursing program is worth millions.

Since you have acceptd ISU's settlement, then that is the end of the issue for you. For others, they are seeking other venues for full reimbursement.

Is it true that ISU is only required to place CA students in clinical sites? When did this come in effect?

The Califoria Nurse Practice Act and the Business and Professional Code specifically states that California nursing schools MUST PROVIDE CONCURRENT didact and clinical classes. Failiure to provide concurrent classes means that those students (as in the ISU nursing students) are not covered under the exemption that allows nursing students to work in a clincal with it is part of the didactic program. Without concurrency, the ISU students were PRACTICING NURSING WITHOUT A LICENSE--as anounced by the CA BRN in its November Board meeting--and have committed a misdemeanor and they can be prosecuted, wile ISU remains free to pull the same scam on other students.
