Indiana State University LPN-BSN 2012

Nursing Students Indiana (ISU)

Published

Hello,

I am due to start the LPN-BSN program at Indiana State University in the fall of 2012 and decided to start a thread for fellow students who may be starting around the same time so that we can connect and support each other.

I'm in Maryland ;)

Ladyinscrubs,

I have a few questions regarding clinical for ISU. I also am from CA, more central region and on another post I saw someone put a link for clinical sites ISU uses for distant learners, and i didn't find a single CA site! I have not enrolled in ISU yet, I am finishing up prereqs, and I was hoping to be applying later on this year for the program. The lack of clinical sites makes me very nervous! I would hate to be going through the program and then get held up because I can't find a site :( I met with a guy from TCN (didn't end up going through them) and he told me that several students do their clinical rotations at the general hospital the next town over, but now I realize he could have easily been lying to me. My question is would you suggest I forget ISU altogether and look elsewhere? Have you been able to find any clinical sites (don't need to know where just wondering if you were successful in finding any in general)? Is finding a clinical site such a hassel that I should not consider going through ISU?

Advice is very much appreciated in this! thank you!!!

Kelly

Clinical sites for CA are managed through the Sonoma State agreement so are not listed on the ISU site.

Kelly, let me correct one thing -- you do not obtain your clinical placement. ISU finds a placement for you. Having said this, you are not the only LVN in California who is nervous. Many in the program are nervous also. This semester's students who are now in N324 (med surg) never received their clinical site. Instead they were told they would take the clinical after this semester ends in summer. Just recently they received an email that those students who receive an incomplete for N324 (which those who have no clinical this semester will receive) may not take any further classes until their incomplete becomes a complete (meaning until they complete the N324 with a clinical and the 60 clinical hours). Many of those students were enrolled in other nursing classes this summer and now they are dead in the water. This means that this problem has delayed graduation for these students. They will not graduate in May 2013 but, if they are lucky, December 2013--all for lack of clinical placement.

No one at ISU is discussing the problems with the California placements. Those in the California ISU program are very nervous. Kellybelly515 is correct, the cliinical sites for California are a separate entity--although at one time University of Bakersfield was listed on the website.

ISU has a handful of people who obtain clincial contracts for the students and one person assigns students to those placements. The Califoria ISU DL program is a hybrid of the regular ISU LPN to BSN program. Because the requirements placed upon ISU by the California BSN, ISU partnered with Sanoma State University. The California program is acutally the SSU/ISU DL LVN to BSN program.

The California information contact person is employed by The College Network and Sanoma State. This is the person who will take your calls on the 800 #, keeps track of the hours student spend in clinical, and submit the student information to the the BSN to get access to the NCLEX once the student graduates. With this most recent clinical placement problem, it appears that there is a problem placing existing California students into clinical sites. Without any true information concering the program from ISU, these students are very concerned that this program is about to implode leaving them with nothing other than receipts for tuition paid.

hi there, what happens when you dont pass ? are they letting you to take it as much as you want till you pass or there is a limit ?

hi there, what happens when you dont pass ?

can't say since i have never been in that situation. refer to the isu lpn to bsn website, which should discuss what happens if you do not maintain a passing gpa or pass a class.

are they letting you to take it as much as you want till you pass or there is a limit

you must take the classes in order they are presented on the lpn to bsn dl nursing site. you can't pick one from column a and then one from column c and then next semester take three from column d. you must take the classes consecutively.

as to how many classes you can take, that is regulated on the way you must take the classes. each class has a prerequisite, which is usually the class before it. this limits your ability to take more than two classes a semester. should you have gen ed classes that must be taken, you could end up taking more than 2 classes a semester (two nursing and the gen ed classes). i suggest you get all your isu gen ed classes out of the way because someplace in the or 3rd semester they may stop your progression until you pass those gen ed classes.

for california students, the calif bon stated that the calif students may not take more than one clinical class a semester. so if you have a didactic class and a clinical class, that would be about it for the semester.

Hello everyone. I am going to be applying to the June 1st, 2012 deadline. I have most all of the classes required for the BSN because I intended on going to Ball State University here in Indiana, so i was wondering if I have the gen-ed classes done that are outlined for that particular semester can i just move on to the next set of nursing classes or can I only take them during certain semesters. I just didn't know if I could progress thru the program quicker since I have so many classes finished already. Thanks

Hello everyone. I will also be starting in the Fall 2012 and it is just a hard decision to make because you have so much information throwed at you and it is very hard to comb through all of it. I talk to the TCN yesterday and I just was not happy with the prices. $25,000 is a lot of money even when you are making payments. I am a single money with a full time job and I just do not have money like that. I really have done my research on ISU. The Florida Board of Nursing recongize them. They are fully accredited which is very good. The BBB gives them an A. So the reserch has been done. I even compared them to other online programs and to me they really stand out. I have been reading comments that others have put on this site about the program and it has been a big help and now I know what direction to take. I will go on amazon.com to see what kind of books I can get to prepare me for the 4 nursing test and then take the TEAS test. I have more classes to take because I do have my AA degree already but ISU stated I can take those while in the nursing program either with them or at a local community college. Thank you all for these post because I was lost with no direction and now I found my way. I will keep you posted on my experience with the program.

Upon failure of 2 nursing courses (or the same nursing course 2 times), you are dismissed from the program. http://www.indstate.edu/bacc-comp-nsg/pdfs/handbook-docs/progression-retention-dismissal-lpn-bs-or-rn-bs.pdf

Whether you can take courses more quickly depends on the pre-requisites of the courses. Some courses can be taken together, others must follow one another. Pre-requisites for courses are listed in the course descriptions in the catalog at Program: Nursing Major - Baccalaureate Track for Students Entering with L.P.N./L.V.N. Licensure - Indiana State University - acalog ACMS (click on the course title to see the description, pre-requisites and credit/clinical hours.

Which courses you take are determined by the department because it is they who authorize you to take classes. If you have not received an authorization to take a class, you will be denied the ability to register for that class. The other issue is locating a facility and a preceptor for the clinical portion of the class. The last considertion is the work load, which is very high and may limit the amount of classes you take.

and that "authorization" is primarily based on whether you have met the prerequisites.

Not necessarily true.

All nursing students must have authorization by the nursing department to register for any class, especially if they have less than a certain amount of units. However, when a student who has more than the those units, the nursing department must authorize the student to register.

This semester some students were enrolled in med/surg but were not provided clinical sites by ISU. They have been required to take an incomplete for the clinical portion. To make things worse, they have been told that they cannot take any further classes until that clinical incomplete is corrected.

Essentially, ISU was unable to provide the student with a clinical site and has stopped the student from taking any further nursing courses until ISU can provide the student with the clinical site and the incomplete is rectified.

agreed...they cannot move on...they have not met the prerequisite for the next course.
