Ok, Fine... no Ivy Tech... Love of nursing!

U.S.A. Indiana

So,

I was a Hospital Corpsman for five years in the U.S. Navy and boy do I have some great stories! I don't want to go on and on about them, but geeze are they very close to Grey's Anatomy! ha! so, Everything from chest tubes, to cabages, iv's to central caths, IJ's to ICP's and then some... so, If you would like to read some, let me know...

but, you know what gets me the most... None of my five year experience is worth ANYTHING to Indiana... I'm sooo disappointed!

I'm sorry...I really wasn't trying to be rude. I have the tendency to not watch my tone online lol. I'm just being honest with you, to tell the truth. I'm REALLY glad (sincerely) that you have faith. You need it! I'm just saying, that from my experience these past two years, those specific grades don't make it in. However, I did preface that in the other thread by also saying that it is dependent upon the applicant pool. I never said I am in. I'm waiting for my letter just like you, and I applied with what will hopefully be three As and one B. I highly doubt I will get in.

I really do wish you luck :redbeathe

@is5512- Most likely, yes. Mainly because of the flexibility I have and the multiple campuses I can attend. I don't have any issues with the school though. With the exception of one prof, I've loved all of my teachers and thoroughly enjoy my classes. ITCC also doesn't charge an app fee which was a big deal for me :) Can't afford to spend $40 per school!

Thanks! I know it can get frustrating but, you're right, if one thing I learned in the military is that complaining doesn't get you anywhere, action does! Like I said before, it takes a huge heart, non critical and a cool head to be a nurse... well, a good one anyway. I've seen my share of Mean Mildred's and I know that's not the kid of people we want to be. I don't know what my pool will be, but I hope the board can see that I've been through the tough part and all i have to do is prove it academically.

I have a 6 month old baby, Sofia, and a 2 year old, Elias. Sofia was born with Hemifacial microsomia. Recently she had to use a feeding tube for five months. Week after week I was placing NG tubes down her little nose. I hadn't had any experience with peds, so this was challenging. But, like I thank God because this wasn't the first time that I had done it! We were considering a G-tube, but we placed her in the hands of God and had faith that she would pull through and eat fine on her own. It was a challenge, but she's flourishing! (Praise God!) She's a normal and healthy baby and meeting all of her milestones!

Every day we have a session of physical therapy (her and I) and we do range of motion, touch therapy, and mommy time of course! I'm just at wonder of how what I've been through helps me be what I am today. I'm sure that that is the case for many others! And, that's why I know that I was meant to be a nurse, and that I will be... We don't go through life aimlessly- there is a reason for our existence! ;)

You sound like you would make a great nurse. I was inspired to go into the medical field d/t my ill child. If they don't take your life learnings into consideration now, don't worry because you can still get in if you apply yourself to the mandatory prerequisites. I just graduated Ivy Tech for LPN in Dec. 2009 and was just accepted to the RN transition program starting this fall. I had a lot of life experience prior to my start at Ivy Tech and I think I was a better student and now a good nurse because of it. You will be too. Don't Give Up! Also, it is $95 per credit hour, but you can still apply for grants, loans, and scholarships. PM me if you would like.

To the poster that asked if someone would really choose Ivy Tech over another school if they both cost the same. My answer would be yes. I graduate in May from a part-time evening class with my ASN with honors. It has not always been easy not always fair, but what program doesn't have some issues? I have had for the most part a good experience. I like the fact that the classes are small. My clinical rotation has had only 9-10 students. Sometimes there have been times when I felt the instructor had favorites, but I chose to rise above it. I like the flexibility that Ivy Tech provides. I have 5 kids, a husband, and for most of the time a full time job while attending school. Ivy Tech is not perfect...but it has gotten me where I want to go.

First, thanks for your service. I'm a USN vet from the 70's was desperate to be a corpsman but ended up as a journalist - go figure.

My dh is retired AF so we moved a lot. I did my LPN to ADN at Marian College in Indy. It was a great school, no wait list at the time (1992) and quick and easy - 18 months. It was expensive though.

My thought for you was to get a job at the VA in Indy and have them pay for school. As a vet, you get preferential hiring so getting a job for you would be much easier.

At any rate, I wish you luck. Personally, I wouldn't go the EC route as it is being recognized in fewer states and going further with your education (which you might want to do later on) might be more difficult.

I have just a quick comment, well hopefully it will be quick. What's wrong with IVYTECH? The one's I know about have had great success in pass rates for the NCLEX, the facilities I have experience with all love ITCC grads... its not like you HAVE to go to Harvard to be a nurse. Ivy Tech teaches you how to pass NCLEX and the skills you need to get you going in the profession (just like every other college) but no you can't get a BSN or MSN @ ITCC, so what an RN is an RN unless your goal is to become a NP or something. Just seems like ITCC gets a bad rap for having comparatively cheaper tuition. Its not cheaper education though.

Anyways... back to your post: If you want your experience to count towards a degree, look into IU, Wesleyan or Ball State (not sure where you are in the state). Im sure one of these colleges would have a program that gives credit for experience ( I am 98% sure Wesleyan college does). Good Luck and don't give up if this is really what you want to do.

I'm also a USN vet, and graduated from ITCC in 07' w/ my ASN... I am currently working toward my BSN we get a $2/hr raise for it at my hospital. Anyway, IU gives 12 cr. hours for military experience, and accepts all credit hours from ITCC.... so it has helped tremendously toward my BSN..... anyway, good luck... and I too wanted to be a corpsman and when I went in they told me my test scores were too high, and had to go into either ET or Nuke.... hated both and ended up a yeoman... HAHAHAHA... stationed at Norfolk VA... loved the Navy... maybe re-joining reserves after I get my BSN as an officer..... ;)

I am currently attending Ivy Tech again. I am also a previous graduate of Ivy Tech. Graduated in 1987 from the Medical Assistant program. Ivy Tech has come such a long way. Right now I am applying to the LPN program and currently preparing to take CNA classes. I am not coming into to the medical field blind sided. I have worked at Norton Hospital as a PCA and also Norton Suburban as a Medical Assistant. I like the medical field and I like helping people. As an LPN, I would preferr caring for older folks, because they have lived there lives taking care of us and now it's our turn to take care of them.

I hoping that I can pass the TEAS test so that I can get into the nursing program. It really sucks that I have to set out a semester or two if I get accepted. I've already completed and passed all my pre-reqs for the LPN program. The only problem that I have with IVY Tech is the fact that you never get a quick response from anyone in financial aid, they seem to drag there feet.

As far as getting the funds to go to school. I'm starting to have that issue also. You have to have excellent credit just to get a decent loan for college. I like ivy tech but the school that I really want to go to that offers LPN without a waiting list is Brown Mackie. They are just so expensive that federal loans want cover the entire cost. They are a good school and they are expanding also. The classes are based on the 1 class a month system, which allows you to work if you have to.

Overall, the medical field is a good field to be in, if your heart is really in it. I do agree that there are a lot of students going to school to be a nurse just for the high pay. It's sad because nursing is such a good caring field. Personally I wouldn't want someone taking care of me who was only in it for the money and didn't really care about me.

So to all those nursing students who love helping people and really care about the needs of others, I wish you much success and your genuine heart will pay off in the end.

Good Luck to all the future nurses. If you don't like Ivy Tech, check out Brown Mackie.
