Indiana Wesleyan (ABSN)...how competitive?

U.S.A. Indiana

Published

I know that no nursing schools are easy to get into but I was wondering how hard it is to get into Indiana wesleyan for their accelerated 2nd degree BSN program. I checked their website last night and I have all of the pre reqs completed but it didnt say anything about the cost or competitiveness on their site. If anyone has done their 2nd degree program before can you give me some insight? Thanks!

Enjoy the remedial learning environment that IWU offers! It's quite humiliating and humbling!

Tips for those accepted into IWU’s accelerated program:

1. DO NOT wait until the last minute to complete your assignments. I have seen a person fail because of this.

2. DO NOT be one of the nagging complainers. This is not a reputation you want to create for yourself. Professors talk!

3. Plan you assignments accordingly. It is okay to plan a day or two out. I learned quickly that planning for the entire seven weeks on the first day of class doesn’t work. There will always be hiccups.

4. DO NOT feel overwhelmed by the amount of work that you need to complete in the seven or four weeks. Students in the past have been successful. So can you!

5. If you are a good test taker and don’t need to study much, don’t share that with your cohort. You will develop enemies quickly. Also, don’t try to downplay you score or knowledge of content. People see right through that.

6. Develop a bond with everyone in the cohort. You will never know who will step up to bail you out. EVERYONE needs bailed a couple of times in the program.

7. DO NOT DISRESPECT the professor in front of the class! If there is a concern you have, e-mail the person and set up a time to meet with him/her. I have seen this happen and the results. By disrespecting the professor, you will surely expedite your exit from the program, guaranteed.

8. Skim the chapters…and read the sections of content you don’t understand during lecture. Read the ATI parts assigned. If you don’t, this will bite you in the rear when you get ready to take the ATI exam at the end of the course and Comp Predictor.

9. Do not talk trash about others in the cohort. This brings the morale down and it will get back to the person. Also, people, during stressful times, really don’t want to be associated with someone who is negative.

10. LASTLY….have fun. You have to have a good sense of humor to get through the program. You DO NOT need to be serious all of the time. Everyone needs a good laugh from time to time, including your professors.

Good luck in the program…

To everyone who was accepted into the program:

Hello! First, I wanted to thank you all for the great threads leading to a LOT of useful important information. Also, I wanted to ask you all a question about my scenario. You all mentioned they only take 24 or so applicants and a lot apply so now I am very worried. I am applying for the Jan cohort and have all of my prereqs completed besides Micro which I am signed up to take this Fall. I have an A in one prereq and B's in the others. However, my cumulative GPA is not that impressive. I graduated with an Exercise Science degree so had to take TONS of math and unfortunately that brought my GPA down. To be exact, my cum is a 3.0. If I can test over an 80 on the Teas Test (which I am taking soon) do you all think I still have a chance to get in considering my cum gpa? Did any of you have a cum gpa similar to that?

Thanks so much for any help and congrats to all of you who were accepted into the program:)

You should do great! They may ask you at your interview why your undergrad degree was not that good, but that is a great time to explain your situation. I was completely honest about my undergrad degree GPA and reasons why it was low. Definitely try to score above an 80 on the TEAS test. It seemed to really help me get into the program. Sounds like your pre-req grades are good too! Best of luck to you! Everything happens for a reason! It is a wonderful program!

Does anyone know how competitive the June 2012 cohort is looking? I have applied and I am stresses about if I will make it in or not.

Thanks for any advice.

I wanted to provide more information about the school. The pass rate for the accelerated program was 100%. Job placement was also 100% after two months of graduation.

ParkerBeanCurdRN,BSN do you know what the average GPA is for the program? I have applied and I want to get in so bad and I am very nervous! Thanks for any advice.

I wish I had an answer for you. I know there were two with GPA's less than a 2.80 but above the minimum required. Some were between a 3.0 and 3.50. There were a few of us above a 3.5. So, all in all the GPA's were scattered. If you don't mind me asking, what is your GPA? If you are invited for an interview, it is a very good sign.

Parker,

Just wondering - was there anyone in your cohort that didn't have healthcare experience prior to graduation and getting a job? I've heard its harder to get a job without any experience.. the reason I ask is I have a little experience volunteering but have not worked in healthcare before.. thanks!

There were only two in my cohort who had current medical experience and a foot in the door. Listen, I took one job and quite honestly, it just wasn’t working out for me (nights). I applied to a different facility for days and closer to my home. I applied on Monday, interviewed on Thursday, and was offered a position on Friday to start the 21st of this month. I honestly think the second-degree BSN graduates are finding it easier to land the job versus graduates without any work experience. I would love to see some research on the topic.

Every resume I sent out, I received a phone call for an interview. I interviewed at three different facilities when I decided to seek employment elsewhere. I was offered a position at all three. And I did not have healthcare experience.

Thanks for responding. I graduated from Purdue in 2004 with a 2.75. I know it is at the bottom, but it was 3 classes (not related to my major, they were accounting classes) that lowered my grades. Everything else were A's and B's. The prerequisite that I have finished at Ivy Tech I have A's and B's. I just hope I can get an interview to explain the grades and explain why I would be a great asset to the nursing program. Any advice?

i have a friend who was in my cohort with the exact same gpa. that person did exceptionally well in the program. i do know the person had all a's for the prereqs...so maybe that had a lot to do with it.

apply and see. if they call you in for an interview...that is a very good sign. keep me posted on what's going on, okay?

good luck!!!
