Indiana Wesleyan (ABSN)...how competitive?

U.S.A. Indiana

Published

I know that no nursing schools are easy to get into but I was wondering how hard it is to get into Indiana wesleyan for their accelerated 2nd degree BSN program. I checked their website last night and I have all of the pre reqs completed but it didnt say anything about the cost or competitiveness on their site. If anyone has done their 2nd degree program before can you give me some insight? Thanks!

Hey! I just wanted to say good luck at your IWU interview! Mine is on the 24th of March! I will also be commuting if I get in from Indianapolis. Maybe we will be commuting together! My friend who started the program in January said the commute is not really bad. She is with three other students and they rotate each day of the week. Anyways...Good luck! Let me know how it goes!

Thanks so much for responding. Your reply must have gone to my spam mail, so sorry for the long delay! Housing advice would be GREATLY appreciated!!!! My parents are actually driving up there with me so they can scope out apartments in the area while I meet with the school, but if you have good apartments and/or rental house suggestions, I'd appreciate it so much. Commuting just isn't something I'd be interested in. Like you, I'm sure I'll need every 3 hours I can save! What do you think of the program so far? Are you totally overwhelmed and asking what you've gotten yourself into or really thrilled with your decision?

MSWwantingBSN- apologies to you, too! But thanks for the encouragement and well wishes!! My interview is at 230 on Friday, so I'll keep you posted and maybe give you some tips before your big interview on the 24th! How fun if we both get in! Good luck to you as well, and congrats!

Does anyone know how many people got interviews for this cohort? I know they accept up to 24 people but did not know the chances of getting accepted after the interview.

Thanks!

smcderma,

I have no clue how many they called in for interviews, but I had mine last Friday and they said I was one of the first and they were going to be interviewing all this week and next. They also told me that we will receive a letter of acceptance or deferral around April 1. I was under the impression that everyone they are considering for acceptance was brought in for an interview to get a feel for the person's communication skills and to make sure that they choose the right fits for the program. Good luck!

MSWantingBSN,

How'd the big interview go today?! Did you get a tour of the lab and campus?

I am sorry for not responding. For those of you in the program, you already understand the enormous amount of free time we get. I don’t mind the drive. There are two of us (sometimes three) who commute together. We always quiz each other after class and on the way to class before an exam. It serves me well. I have to say that I am so glad we only have four weeks left before the end of the program. I honestly don’t know if I could do another 7 or 4 week semester! For those of you in the program, how do you like it? It can be challenging, but when you get to the last four months of the program, you will look back and say two things. First, it was worth the investment. Second, was I in a suicidal mindset when I agreed to do the program?

If you don’t mind, I would like to share some things with everyone. Now, this is my personal experience, so take it for what it is worth. First, I did well in the program. I was not the straight A student, but my GPA is pretty stellar. If I had it to do all over, I would have done some things differently. First, study your ATI. I know there isn’t much time, but if you can fit it in either during break of during a free hour, do so. The comprehensive is difficult. We have, in my opinion, very intelligent people in our cohort who have not passed it. I barely did. What does it mean? You have to pass with a 75%, which indicates you have a 95% chance of passing NCLEX during the first sit. It covers EVERYTHING! Also, you will not be taking your Pharm ATI until your Critical Care course. Make sure you are studying it during your Pharm course and afterwards before critical care. You WILL NOT have the time during your critical care course.

Speaking of critical care… studying PowerPoints alone will not prepare you to pass the exams. This course builds upon what you have already learned. The exams are application based. They are a little more difficult. Be prepared. Also, take advantage of every clinical opportunity. This will enhance your ability to secure employment. Believe me…nursing managers talk. I already have a job offer when I graduate. If you have any questions about assignment (Careplans, papers, ect…) PM me and I will give you my personal e-mail address. I will be more than happy to shed light onto how to maximize the points on those assignments.

Good luck to all of you!

Hi everyone! I got accepted and will be starting July 1st! :) Anyone else get accepted on this thread?

Everyone was correct about the interview-I could not read their expressions at all. They stayed well composed and did not let me get a feel for whether or not they wanted me! I did get a tour of the labs though, which were so nice!

I was also accepted! See you on July 1st!

I got accepted, too!! Woohoo!!!!

As for the interview, I actually thought I could read them very well. They were very engaging with me, made positive facial expressions, especially when I told them I was taking classes this semester even though I don't need them & my volunteer experience, cracked jokes with me, etc. I walked out of there feeling like I had just sat down with two people I had known for awhile and came out feeling very confident. That being said, I also have my degree in communications/journalism and took a lot of classes on studying body language and communication cues, so perhaps I just picked up on it more? Whatever, doesn't matter now!

Can't wait to meet you guys and get this adventure underway! See you July 1st!

Marianne

Hi all-

I am looking into ABSN programs throughout the state and am very interested in IWU because it is only 14 months and it is close to home. I have looked into Marian, St.Elizabeth/St.Joe, and a few others. (I was accepted into St. Elizabeth but the cohort does not start until Fall 2012 & their NCLEX rates weren't great. I am still considering it though.) I was wondering where you all took the pre-reqs for IWU?? What is tuition running now? Do you have to have the pre-reqs done before you apply? Does anyone know what cohort is being filled now?

I am going to try to attend the info session the second week in May, but thought I would ask some questions here as well.

Congrats to all who have been accepted!

Thanks!

Tuition was about 33K for the program.

I took all of my pre-reqs at IVY Tech

You can apply to the program without having completed your pre-reqs. You will receive a conditional offer pending successful completion of those courses.

I am not sure which cohort is being filled now. I think the July cohort is filled, so I believe they are working on the January 2012 cohort.

Awesome, thanks for the info! I plan on taking some pre-reqs at Ivy Tech asap. What about the TEAS V? Can you apply before you have taken that?

That I am not sure about. You have the contact information for the school of nursing? If so, give them a call. The person C.V. is very helpful and will be able to answer that question for you.
