Indiana Wesleyan (ABSN)...how competitive?

U.S.A. Indiana

Published

I know that no nursing schools are easy to get into but I was wondering how hard it is to get into Indiana wesleyan for their accelerated 2nd degree BSN program. I checked their website last night and I have all of the pre reqs completed but it didnt say anything about the cost or competitiveness on their site. If anyone has done their 2nd degree program before can you give me some insight? Thanks!

Sunshine is correct. Because of the number of applicants applying to the program, they decided to start a spring 2010 cohort. There were only 14 spots and I was told that about 80 people applied. I was also told that about 175 apply for the 24 spots for summer start. The pass rates are phenomenal and so far, I really love the program. While yes it does have a hefty price tag, I am a firm believer that you get what you pay for.

ParkernBeanCurd,

Would you mind telling me more about your experience at IWU in their ABSN program. I just got off the phone with Cathy Voight and will be applying for July 2011 admission (I missed the deadline to start this winter). I have a 3.5 in undergrad, a 90 on TEAS, and an A or B in the four prereq's, so I think I could at least stand a chance of getting in.

I was just wondering what your experience has been like, the organization of the program, what the instructors are like (especially in terms of willingness to help), the level of difficulty (obviously I'm not anticipating it to be easy ;)), the lab environment, some of the hospitals you've done clincals at, etc. ANYTHING you can tell me I'd appreciate. I can't private message, so if you want to email me, [email protected] is one of my many email addresses ;) Thank you so much for any help you can offer, I appreciate it.

And the price tag is hefty, but at least you don't pay it all at once. And I was really interested in Marian's program, which is 48k! 16 thousand less is 16 thousand less! :)

yes, i am a student at iwu. i am in the cohort that will graduate in april of 2011. you will more than likely interview with two people. one will be vp (initials) and another professor. they will ask you general questions to gage your personality. the questions are open-ended, so simple responses of yes or no will not do. they are trying to get a feel of you and your communication skills. they will ask you what you think a nurse is. don't forget what kind of school you are applying to. with that being said, spiritual care is important. i forgot to mention this during my interview, but they asked me how i would feel about giving spiritual care, which i responded that i would have no problems at all doing so.

they will ask you why you want to be a nurse. get creative here. i am sure they have heard the normal, "i want to help people". i don't remember my exact response, but i mentioned about wanting to be the patient's advocate and wanting to enhance the lives of those i touch, ect...

they then asked where i see myself in the next ten years in my career as a nurse. i am interested in nursing education, so i told them i plan to be a floor nurse for a couple of years, then return to school or my msn to become a professor.

dress to impress. after my acceptance, i had a course with the professor in my interview. she remembered the suit i wore. i had forgotten.

a reliable source told me that everyone who interviewed for our cohort was accepted and the same is true with the newest cohort. however, she did tell me that in the past, they invited some to interview at the last minute because the department head was not impressed with a few of the candidates.

you will not know the day of your interview whether you got in or not. if you are unable to gage on how well the interview went, relax. it was the same for me. they did a great job of hiding emotions. i couldn't read a single person.

as far as how competitive the program is, there were almost 300 that applied to the cohort you are applying to and the last i heard, they are only offering 14 seats. but i have heard they are considering changing it to 25, but i suppose we will see.

if accepted, hold on tight. the program is a whirlwind! we have a test tomorrow over 17 chapters! the professors are excellent! the other thing that sold me on the program was their 93% pass rate. everyone in the cohort before us passed their nclex on the first sit. so, they do a good job of preparing you.

if you need any other information, just pm me and i will be happy to share.

good luck to you.

ParkerBeanCurd,

Thank you so much for sharing all that wonderful information. My interview is tomorrow and I hope all goes very well.

Do you live in the dorm or off campus? I was also very curious as to what is available for housing, and what is expected of the students.

Thanks again,

Thanks again,

Just wanted to do a follow up to see how your interview went. What did you think?

ParkerBeanCurd,

Well you were right. I have no idea how the interview went or where I stand. I am a bit worried. The campus is gorgeous, and the nursing lab is absolutely amazing!! I really hope they offer me admission to the program!! Now is the waiting period....

Have you heard anything about the spring cohort ? In the interview I asked how many seats they are allowing, and they said 24. I didn't ask how many applicants they had, but am wondering what i'm up against.

BTW, How did the 17 chapter exam go?

I received a 97 on the exam...thanks for asking. I have not heard anything about the next cohort. I would imagine that you will be receiving notification soon. If I remember correctly, I received mine about the first week of December. I know they are done with the interviewing process. I am sure you will be accepted. That seems to be how it goes, especially if you got a tour of the lab. Yeah, the lab is nice, but you will get sick of it quickly, especially after your first two semesters J

Keep me updated with your status. If accepted (and I am sure you have been), I will see you at a luncheon provided by the school where all three cohorts will get together to talk.

I forgot to also mention that I am unsure of the housing in Marion. A couple of us commute each day from Indianapolis.

Parkerbeancurd,

Well I got in!!! But also got accepted into another program...Now I have to choose quickly which program to attend. Any suggestions?

Thanks again for your help!

ParkerBeanCurd,

Thank you SO much for all of your information!!!!! I received an email today asking me to come for an interview March 18!!! I am so excited & appreciate all your tips for the interview, I'll be sure to use them.

One question:

You said you commute everyday from Indy-- how has that been? I live in Carmel and really, really dread commuting, so I'm hoping to temporarily move to Marion if I get into the program. Do you know anyone who has done that?

Which program did you decide to do?

I decided on Indiana Wesleyan!! If you have any questions, or need some advice for housing, let me know. My husband and I live in Indy, but I found an apartment to rent while in the program. It has been so helpful in the past 6 weeks to live close to campus...I have needed all of the 3hours that I would have spent driving back/forth from indy. Best of Luck to you!!
