New grad pay- Southern Illinois

U.S.A. Illinois

Published

Im hoping someone can clear something up for me here...

My best friend is starting the accelerated BSN program at Barnes Jewish in St Louis in May 08. She was apparently told by a nurse friend of hers that new grad RNs start around $44/hr base in Southern IL (where she currently lives and is planning to move back to after school).

Im an ER RN in Dallas and we dont start anywhere NEAR that... I cant imagine the cost of living in Southern Illinois is that much higher than Dallas that it would warrant such a dramatic change. (LA and NYC dont even start new grads that high!)

Any insight?

Im concerned that she's making a lot of plans for after graduation based on false information that she was given and that she'll have a rude financial awakening with her first job.

I think your friend is greatly mistaken. All the hospitals in my area of Southern IL start new grads out between $16-$18.

Totally agree! $44 in Southern IL - not happening! I live in central IL and starting pay is $17-19/hour.

Wish $44.00/hr. were true, but Schroeder and Trauma are right on target. I am a new grad in southern IL. and that is the range at which new grads start at. Wonder where the $44.00/hr. came from? I'm origianlly from southern CA and even they don't pay that much for new RN's!

I'm wondering what they are considering 'southern Illinois'. I know people who think that the St. Louis area is 'southern Illinois'.

I moved to Green Bay from near Carbondale (that's in southern Illinois....LOL!) because the pay was horrible and there isn't that much opportunity.

There are some registry positions in that range here in Chicago, but not staff. Staff for new grads in the city hover around 25-29/hr. I have a friend who started at Univ of Chicago in the high 20's (28 I think) and another who started at Mt. Sinai at $24.50.

I'm back in southern Illinois and making just under $19/hr.

Sucks though, cause I was making over $23/hr in a small town in Wisconsin!!

Try $30,000/year at Carbondale Memorial Hospital

I make more than that, but perhaps it's because of the unit I'm on. I don't know. Do you work there? I work on IMCU.

That was the last number quoted to me by a person I know at HR. I don't personally work there, although I know quite a few people who do

Well, like I said, I don't know if it varies from unit to unit or whatever, but I make about 38,000/yr and been there almost three months. And the benefits are excellent too.
