City Colleges of Chicago and HESI exit exam
Something like this happens EVERY year with the City Colleges of Chicago...and nothing ever changes. It's nice to vent, but in the end nothing will change.

Moraine Valley College
I took the four week course with Timmons...it's great as long as you don't have any distractions like work. Kamal stood in for Timmons for a few class sessions and he was fine, but has a strong Indian accent that can be difficult to understand at times.

Moraine Valley College
Professor Timmons is THE best! It seems as though that the negative ratings on ratemyprofessors.com simply didn't feel like putting in the effort. If you read what they say, it's easy to pick up on the fact that they just wanted to "skate" by and not put in any work to get a good grade. God forbid one should study!!?!? :) Timmons will help you..but he's not going to seek you out..you need to go to him.

Should Doctors Have Guns?
I think ER docs should carry pre-filled syringes of potassium chloride holstered like a bandolier around their chests! Ready to go at a moment's notice

Medical school vs Nursing School
Doctors treat diseases...nurses treat patients. Nursing is a better fit..for me at least. For me it wasn't a decision that nursing is the "low" road versus medical school. I don't think a doctor is anymore higher or lower than a nurse in terms of status, society may think differently however. Consider business. There are many jobs in a company that make the business go. Even in business school there is a wide array of choices one can specialize in. One may choose management, while another may choose accounting/finance. Two different paths of study..all leading to the same goal: running businesses. Nursing and medicine are similar in that they are all leading to the same goal: good patient care and good patient outcomes. Besides with managed care getting more and more momentum, who the hell wants to be a doctor now anyway? Insurance companies, medicare, and medicaid are taking the autonomy away from doctors anyway. Before you know it, the practice of medicine will be nothing more than following a simple algorithm. Including undergrad, you're looking at at least 8 years plus residency of 3-4 years...getting calls at all hours of the day and night "hi this is so-and-so, mrs. smith has a fever of 101.1..what would you like us to do?"...forgot it!

Bachelor's to ADN or BSN bridge programs
Many, if not most, programs that offer a masters degree offer an advanced entry program of some sort. If you have an undergrad degree in any field, you can attend one of these programs as a graduate student, end up with your RN as well as a masters degree. It's a generalist masters, not an APN but a masters nonetheless. DePaul, UIC, and I think Loyola offer it as well as Rush University. Then your route to midwifery will be as simple as a post-masters cert. and you're on your way. Good Luck!

An Online MSN -NP program?
this is on their nursing dept's website (which is good enough for me :) ): [color=#0000a0]the master of science in nursing program is accredited by the commission on collegiate nursing education (ccne). accreditation is an indication of public approbation, attesting to the quality of the educational program and the continued commitment of the sponsoring institution to support the program.

An Online MSN -NP program?
I have to ask...but how exactly does on "online" NP program work? It doesn't seem, to me at least, that it's even possible...doesn't one need to perform a specific number of clinical hours? How are those coordinated? The reason I ask is that an online program would be tremendously helpful considering my family situation. My wife is not that thrilled about me attending graduate school right now, but an online program may be an easier "sell"...

NCLEX RN result, how soon did you find out and how did you
One can take the NCLEX at any testing faciltiy for any state...I tested in Chicago with people that were applying to be licensed in Massachusetts, New York, Indiana. PearsonVue happens to be the exclusive vendor it would seem. As this is the Illinois forum, my post only related to Illinois, although the availability of results is accurate for any state because it's from Pearson.

Largest ED in the US
Ohhh....I LOVE the idea of the "pod" set up...it's like having a handful of mini-ed's in one large ED...very nice idea indeed! Does each resource nurse report to the charge nurse on a given shift? Are those positions perm. or ad-hoc? Do you have a fast-track? How big is triage?

An Online MSN -NP program?
Is the competition for MSN programs that fierce that one would need to apply to 36 programs?!?! That makes me a bit nervous as I consider graduate school...

Older Nursing Student 1st Timer
Howdy John, Not sure how this thread escaped my attention when you first started it, but I'd just like to extend a "hello" to you as a fellow..older...male..nurse :) I left a tech-sales position in 2004 and attended a full-time BSN program here in Chicago. Graduated this past May and work as an ER nurse in a level-one trauma center now. I hope you're enjoying your nursing training/education. Nursing is fantastic! Regards, Jeff
