City of Chicago College - Truman Nursing Program 2013 Applicants

U.S.A. Illinois

Published

Hi Everyone,

I'm starting this article for all of the City of Chicago nurse applicants for 2013. I'll first start with a little about why I'm choosing Truman vs Daley or Malclom x and I'll also add some pertinent information that I think would be useful for everyone.

So.....

From what' I've learned, after you complete all the pre-req's

Math

Bio

Chem

English

you can apply. In my case, I've finished all of these so I am continuing on to Bio 226 & 227 prior to applying to the program, which will help me out in the long run.

The application opens around 10/10/2012, and shortly after the TEAS exam registration will open to take on-campus at Truman.

I wonder how strict they are for those who accepted? Does anyone know if your TEAS score has a big impact on their decision?

How much is are the fees for your criminal background check, immunizations, and TEAS exam?

I thought Daley was late passing things out.....Malcolm X is really delayed. I advise you get started asap once you do get it! The deadline to submit all health records is July 1st!!!

Thanks!! Is it ok for you to post what it says? If not, I understand.

You need titers for measles mumps rubella varicella and hep b. tdap and flu vaccine. 2 step Tb or quantiferon gold lab. A 10 panel drug screen and a physical. They'll give you specific paper work to complete for the physical. It also includes and hearing and vision test.

I spoke to ******* today. Registration for Truman is not going to be until the week of orientation in the end of August. Classes begin the following week. I know many of us have jobs and/or children and would prefer to have more time to plan our schedule since the class and clinical times we want are not a guarantee. If this is also a big concern for you, please call or email them so maybe they will reconsider and move the registration to July.

Good luck with that. You can email them til you're blue in the face and they will not change anything. You will just be told that you need to be flexible. Get used to it - it's what you'll be dealing with for the next two years.

Registration is the week before class starts. Classes are Mondays and Wednesdays - no clue how your clinicals will be since they've had difficulty getting clinical sites for about a year and a half now.

Thank you. I guess I am just going to have to "be flexible" and hope everything works out. Are you currently in the program?

Nope - just graduated :)

adraorien, do you have any advice in regards to the program? I know others have said that it can be a bit disorganized. Did you find that continued throughout the program?

Also, now that you have graduated, are you finding much luck with finding jobs within the Chicago area?

I almost done with everything! I believe my Physical is complete along with the 10 panel test, and I just gotta wait for the Backgound to be done (couple more days) it's so exciting to know that Nursing School is sooo close!!!!! I work around a lot of RNs and they let me know it won't be easy by a long shot- but it's worth it!!! I'm so excited!!

Disorganized is a great word for it. Truth be told, I think the office staff are a bunch of morons. If you need anything from them, you need to make sure you are on top of them and make sure you have copies of everything you turn in to them. I also don't have the highest regard for the director.

The first year instructors that I encountered were great overall. Second year, not so much. There are some gems, but for the most part, be prepared to do a lot of self learning and be incredibly aggravated.

The best advice I can give is once you complete your first semester, take the CNA exam and find a job as a CNA somewhere. Even if you have to work 1 night a week, it's a foot in the door. You already have a strike against you when you graduate because your an ADN, but if they know you, and know your work ethic, you're more likely to get hired. That's what I did and I have a job waiting for me in a hospital on a sought after unit.

Also, be prepared to complete your BSN. You're going to have to do it and it doesn't matter if you already have a BA/BS in something else. It's irrelevant in the hiring process.

Oh, and one other thing - pray that the NCLEX pass rates don't continue to fall. Over the last 3 years, they've progressively dropped. If the 2013 and 2014 classes have lower rates, those of you graduating in 2015 will have a negative reputation to fight against as well.

Good luck and hang in there!
