Hi all! I've started this thread for those of us who have gotten the good news and have been accepted to start the nursing program at Truman College in Fall 2012!

If you are still waiting to hear, I would suggest visiting the other thread I started for some helpful information, tips, and support!

Here's what I know so far:

  • There WILL be clinicals in the first semester (6 hours)
  • The classes will be scheduled via a lottery system
  • We should be receiving a letter from Dr. Gurney in the near future that details what our next steps should be!

So now it is back to everything being due on June 15?? I thought it was changed to July 1 like the FAQ email stated??

Question 7 talks about the due date. This is so frustrating.

Frequently Asked Questions

Question 1: What type of CPR card do I need? A CPR card from the American Heart Association or from the Red Cross?

Answer: Either card is acceptable BUT it must be a Healthcare Provider. NO other format is acceptable in order to meet the clinical guidelines.

Question 2: What happens if I miss nursing orientation?

Answer: Nursing Orientation is mandatory and its part of your nursing program. The orientation is vital to your success in the nursing program. Unfortunately, if you are unable to attend you will not be able to register for the nursing program.

Question 3: Can I switch from a day session to an evening session? Or Can I switch from an evening to a day session?

Answer: Students can put their names on a waiting list by contacting the nursing department at 773-907-4641 we are unable to guarantee you will be switched.

Question 4: What types of blood test are required?

Answer: You must ask your physician to draw titers to indicate your immunity and results need to be submitted, this information is a requirement of our clinical affiliation sites.

Question 5: Will I be able to submit part of my health record while I await lab results from my physician?

Answer: Your entire health record must be complete and turned into the nursing office located in Room 2170 to the Clinical Coordinator Ms. Parmella Walker. We will NOT accept an incomplete record. Please be sure to make a copy for your own health record, the nursing office will not be able to make any copies.

Question 6: When can I register for my nursing courses for fall 2012?

Answer: An e-mail will be sent in July regarding Fall 2012 registration.

Question 7: How do I submit my medical records?

Answer: Medical records should be hand delivered to the Nursing Department by July 1, 2012 as indicated in the admission requirement sheet. Please note this date is different from the one that was included in your acceptance letter. If possible please submit your health record as soon as possible. Your complete health information needs to be submitted to our clinical partners. Please be sure to make a copy for your own records. Copies will not be provided.

Question 8: I already have CPR BLS certification through the American Heart Association as of January 2012. This is valid for 2 years. Will they approve this? (With that I mean to say: Do I need to take this again since I already have certification)?

Answer: Your CPR card cannot lapse while you are in the nursing program it is your responsibility to keep a current CPR card while you are in the nursing program. If your CPR card is elapse you will not be able to attend clinical NO Exceptions!

Question 9: Do I need to complete another Background Check?

Answer: No, the background check that was submitted with our application is sufficient unless indicated by our clinical partners. You will not need another background check until next year.

Question 10: Classes are offered on a first come, first serve basis. How do I ensure that I can get my desired time slot?

Answer: Registration is done in a lottery format. You will be able to pull your number on the day of orientation

Question 11: Where can I go get my drug testing? Can I go to my own physician or do I have to use the list that was provided in the e-mail.

Answer: You can have your physician complete your drug testing you do not have to use the list of places that was listed in your acceptance letter please be sure to review the health checklist with the specific drug components that need to be tested. This is a requirement for our clinical partners. Remember it must be a 10 Panel Drug Urine Screen.

Question 12: Can I miss the first week of class?

Answer: Due to the rigor of the nursing program it is important to attend all of the courses.

I did not get the new email that some of you were posting. All our health requirements and drug test can be done at MercyWorks, is this correct? If so, I am going to give them a call and schedule an appointment. Also, I really hope my insurance cover the titers because it seems expensive. Please let me know guys. Thank you!

Chicagogirl710- I agree, I can't believe how lucky I was. I really am hoping that they can let you turn everything in before classes start and you will be able to get things taken care of after you have your new little baby. I know how you feel though. I considered waiting it out too, thinking it would all just be too much this year but I just can't let it go another year.

yes you can schedule an appt at Mercy, or if you have insurance you should schedule an appt with you PCP. Mercy is cheap, one of my friends went there. You should call your insurance and ask them if the titers and the drug screening is covered. The Tdap should be cover 100%( unless you had one in the past 10 years) and the MMR and Hepatitis B shots are covered too, if you are not immune to any of the other titers.

For anyone with Blue Cross PPO, I got everything done at the Northwestern Travel/Corporate Health clinic. The drug test was $42 out of pocket, but all the titers are covered by insurance with a $30 office visit co-pay. I don't think they accept other providers, but I figured I'd let you know just in case.

I went today to submit my medicals to the nursing office. I asked about the health insurance if we need it, but our school does not require it for clinicals.

I went to Mercy today at Dearborn Station downtown in Printers Row. I tried to make an appointment last week but they said it is a walk-in clinic. I got excellent, quick service today. They even gave me a student discount because I had printed out the official paperwork that I got in the email from Truman. I had a positive experience with that office of Mercy and recommend it.

Note: They don't do the tuberculosis test on Thursdays because the second part has to be done 48-72 hours later and they are closed on the weekends.

violet.78 - did you also submit your cpr certification as well or just the medicals? The reason I asked is because I am planning on turning in my medicals first and my CPR later. My CPR class is June 30th and I do not want to turn everything in at the deadline incase I am missing something on my medicals.
