Just landed my first hospice job! How did I do?

Currently: Medical-Surgical ICU for the past 10 months making $26.50/hour on night shift

New job: RN Case Manager, $55,000 per year, 42 cents per mile, on call one weekend every 8 weeks. $200 for that weekend plus $45 for phone calls and $100 per visit I have to go on. They supply the scrubs and supplies (office and medical). No car since I will be the Case Manager over my own city.

This is about 2 hours away from DFW.

Is this about comparable? Any advice for a new hospice nurse?

Your on-call salary (with additional pay for visits and calls) sounds pretty sweet. I think the salary + mileage is competitive as well. Congrats on your new job!

Sounds like a sweet deal! Hope you enjoy your new position! My advice- make a habit of jotting down notes on something you will see everyday (I use my driving record) so you will remember to follow up on the things you need to follow up on such as ordering DME/supplies, making phone calls, writing careplans or infection reports, etc. Once you leave the office to start on your route, it is difficult sometimes to switch gears and get those things done on the road. Also, expect a long learning curve and good luck!

NICE DEAL! I'm a Hospice RNCM in Florida and have about the same deal. We don't have to work weekends but we can volunteer to pick up a triage shift for some extra $$$. Here is another quick tip: Last thing to do before you step out of the car is press your "Reset" button on your mileage. That way you are forced to look at what you just drove, and if you forget to hit the button when you get back into the car it's already done!

Thanks for the advice! I am glad to know its a pretty good deal! Unfortunately my hospital I am currently at is throwing a huge fit! I am leaving before my two year contract (New grad RN) so I will have to pay a $2,000 fine. Which is fine and I knew I would have to pay it. Not the greatest hospital to work for, but they are being horrible about it. They told me "they don't do payment plans, and that I will either need to pay it in full or it will come out of my last paycheck (won't even be $2,000)." When I told them I can't just write them a $2,000 on a moments notice and that I would need a payment plan they said thats my problem because I am the one that chose to leave! Still working on this one though! Can't wait to start. November 4 can't get here soon enough!

Sounds like you got a sweet deal! A Garmin (or similar) will be invaluable for finding your way to patients :) Hospice is absolutely sacred work and I hope you enjoy it!

I use the Waze app, which has only led me to the wrong place once or twice. :/ But it's a free app, and for the most part, is accurate.

I suggest trying to get a short term loan to pay out the contract. You don't want a 'no rehire' on your resume.
