Employer bait & switch, regret accepting hospice position,

I have to keep this general but am hoping to get the point across & gain some feedback.

A few months back I was interviewed/hired for a PRN hospice position - was told no call, no weekends unless I wanted to, no nights, mileage would be paid, supplies provided and paid hourly not per visit. Management changed between my job offer & my getting started. I was told after driving 165 miles a day for 2 days for orientation outside my area that was mandatory that I will not be compensated for this mileage nor the round trip drive time (4 hrs) but I will be paid for the actual time in class - which means 8 hrs and over 300 miles I have to eat. There were 2 more days scheduled but I flat refused since the drive time & mileage would then be over 600 miles & 24 hrs of "free" times for them. The reason for not paying mileage or drive time is "the company feels the quality of education and training provided more than covers the cost of travel and pay for these days." Direct quote from an email I received.

In addition I was told that PRN is nothing the office I am going to be based out of is going to offer so it's FT or part time or nothing - plus call & scrubs are not allowed - only business attire - which seems odd to me given we are going into patients homes to do assessments, etc.

Then the pay - originally pay was every 2 wks. Now it's 2x month & the first pay check is mailed - I am still waiting for it. Am told it will be here "this week"

I am angry over this & have no choice but to continue until I find something else. This is not a national or ever particularly large hospice so I think that's part of the problem. I know being angry doesn't & there is nothing I can do to change this - so I'm venting I guess.

Did you by chance get the partiiciulars that you were promised in writing? If you are having trouble getting a paycheck for hours worked call your local wage and means department.

All they had me sign was a job description...this has turned into a "nightmare" - found out yesterday the time I'm spending in the office and riding along with another nurse is not total time paid - only the time I'm charting - which is crazy since I'm the one doing the assessments in the home so she can check me off on competencies. Which means though I worked 8:30-5 I will be paid for basically 1/2 that time. Many nurses have left in the past month, they are using agency to help cover, one case manager has 19 or 20, the other CM has 27 patients AND is on call for the next 2 wks including the weekends. There were some other issues yesterday w/two patients revocation - the patients and their families said they has never seen the same nurse, the MSW hadn't shown up at all..it's a small agency attached to a larger one that is located in another area of the state. The patients we did see are NOT hospice patients - home health but not hospice - which is why one nurse left because she felt, this according to the person I was riding with, the agency was having patients on service that are not hospice qualified. I agree. I have had not so good jobs before but this one, it the #1 worst.

Walk out and leave it off the resume. Chalk it up to thieves hiring you and get gone.

The paycheck isn't a big deal....as far as twice per month. That is a common method of payment and the first paycheck will be mailed until your direct deposit kicks in...that is also, common.

Everything else IS a big deal.

I wouldn't complain...just join the ranks of everyone else that has left and find another job ASAP (unless you can afford to resign immediately) and to be honest? I wouldn't even give them a notice when you leave. I would tell them you were not coming back when I had the next day off.

What they are doing is FRAUDULENT, plain and simple.

"Funny" you all posted this because late yesterday I did just that. Resigned. I am hoping my check will show up this week - if not, I plan to contact the corporate office Monday and keep on until I get it. I have no supplies, etc. to return. so I'm good there.

I want to notify Medicare of the fraud but don't have any proof other than what I've witnessed and heard. Is that enough? I plan to call the tip hotline today at least. They are not only ripping off the medicare/insurance co. but the patients as well. Absolutely the worst employer ever for me.
