Hello to all HH Nurses, unappreciated, overworked and underpaid.

Tell me what you think about the mileage with the gas prices soaring. Let me me know about your routes and how you organize yourself in getting your visits completed. Do you work like I do, complete your visit, then chart afterwards? How do you manage to live normally, get pay less and work after hours whether on the phone or charting?:redbeathe

Whew, first I had to convert from Kilometres. Taking 1Km to equal 0.63 miles, my .36 a Km comes to .57 a mile roughly. I think I did that right! :smackingf Ontario, Canada not-for-profit HH agency.

Sue

I get $.49 per mile. Federal rates are now $.58!!! Wow! That would be really nice.

hr sent thi letter today:

...health system’s policy on mileage reimbursement is to follow the irs guidelines. therefore since the internal revenue service announced an increase in the mileage reimbursement rate, ....home health will increase mileage reimbursement to 58.5 cents per mile for all business miles driven, beginning july 1, 2008. this increase will be reflected in your july 18, 2008 paycheck.

gotta love my employer

i am on my second hh job. my first job management was awful but we were always reimbursed at the irs rate. my second employer does not reimburse at that rate. currently i am getting $.44/ mile. this is in new england too where gas is so high. my question is how can hh companies decide what to reimburse. and no i can not claim this on my taxes.

hh agencies decide mileage reimbursement as a cost of doing business ---what they can afford.

if you keep mile logs, you can subtract difference not paid on your taxes if you itemize....see tax advisor.

see: revenue procedure 2007-70 contains additional information on these standard mileage rates.

Thanks for the info Karen. Unfortunately most people can not itemize any more.

Does anybody know if you can deduct your vehicle as a business expense? Or, if there are special rules, like if I put a sticker of the HH agency I work for on my car, does that help the tax situation?

OK, so we are required to have and maintain our vehicles in good working order to use on the job as a HH nurse. I get it. Supposedly the difference between milage reimbursed and the cost we pay per mile, is our maintenence payment. Now, I could not have this job were it not for my personal choice to own a vehile, which is an expense to me. I could get some other job that would not require me to own a vehicle. I am required to provide my car, so shouldn't I be able to deduct part of the cost of owning it and using it for business purposes?

I guess my logic is similar to that of work uniforms. If an employer requires a specific uniform they must pay, if I must wear a certain uniform (scrubs) of my chosing, I pay but it is tax deductible. It is required, work-exclusive clothing that's why it is tax deductible. If I happen to wear my scrubs at other times for personal use, it does not disqualify them for the deduction. So if my car is required, and I still use it for personal purposes, I don't see why it shoudl not be tax deductible? At least partially or a flat rate. Any thoughts?

Based on your statement that you would not own a car were it not for your job, I would say that you could deduct the cost of owning your car. However, you would have a very difficult time proving that you only used the car for this purpose. You could never use the car for anything else and would need records to show this. I vaguely remember reading something about this years ago when I was doing taxes.

I have visited patients in the home since 1987. Obviously, I love it. I do believe there are things we must insist on as the costs of driving soar. We must be reimbursed with each pay check--not continue to carry the gas bill all month for our employers. Better yet, company cars may make sense more sense for HH for workers. Why not? Many enjoy a company car use as a part of their employment. Or, creatively, a low rate interest loan through our employer if we drive miles to see patients---to finance those new care we need so much more often. Discount buying for tires, oil changes...this makes sense to me.

Our company just got bought out and we were at 48c/mi. now down to 42/mi. They are cutting costs all over the place with the new co. It used to be 250 for being on-call the whole weekend, now they only pay us 60. Its frustrating. I see patients in two different counties and when possible I will try to see my patients in one county one day and then the next day see the ones in the opposite county. It doesnt always workout and but I still try!! On the successful days I only drive about 30-40 mi. instead of 70-80.

I just found out today (first day on the job) we dont get reimbursed mileage at all! Should I run?
