Leaving SNF/LTC for HH Nursing

Specialties Home Health

Published

I recently took a job with a Home Health in Hawaii. I am still considered a new graduate nurse after two years in SNF/LTC, I have learned a great deal but feel it's time for change and the nurse to patient ratio is crazy not to mention dealing with IVs, PICCs, Gtubes, Trachs and passing medications to 30 people plus the acuity is that of a hospital without the proper equipment. I honestly feel burnt out. I have been reading the topics on Home Health Nursing and seeing that some nurses feel overwhelmed and it's way too much documentation on top of making phone calls, driving to homes etc. I am starting to over think and I have not started yet. The agency does a pay per visit and does reimburse for mileage. I guess I am scared... I hope I made the right decision. I am staying PRN with the facility I am leaving just in case things don't work out.

HELP... Did I make the right decision?! I need to try it out right?!

For those who hate paperwork and driving, it doesn't usually work out. For those who can tolerate paperwork and driving, the one on one patient care, team environment, and seeing/ hearing the difference you make on a daily basis makes it worth it.

There's no easy nursing job out there, everyone is working hard, but HH IMO allows me to be the nurse I envisioned in nursing school, and I'm paid well enough to do it.

(Home health in Hawaii, are you kidding? How awesome that would be!)

I went from SNF to HH and it was the best decision I ever made. HH is so much better!

Just curious what the update is on your decision to become a HH nurse. I also live in Hawaii and am considering applying for a HH position. How do you like it? What is a typical week like?

It has been almost a year and a half since I left the SNF and started working in home health and I love it. So much better! Definitely the right decision.
