Would you call out sick?

Nurses Stress 101

Published

So day off of work had a stomach bug no vomiting thank the Lord. 9 hour's of diarrhea 3 to 4 times an hour. I was having bouts of nausea/cramps and a fever of 100 up until 12AM. Had diarrhea again at 2AM.

I finally feel better, but I concerned if I should still go in. Hate calling out I only am allowed 3 occurrences a year before being written up.

Some facilities require to call out if you are throwing up or having diarrhea within a specific time frame. Please call in so that you can heal/rest, and don't get your coworkers or patients sick...

A couple of months ago my very sweet coworker did not go home when she started having n/v. The next day I came down with it and spent the following day in the bathroom, sick. I would rather work short staffed then get sick with that kind of virus from a sick coworker who decided to tough it out.

I am a horrible person but I did not call off sick for the week I had a GI bug. I tried to get them to send me home early in the ER though. Imodium wasn't even working. I think I picked it up from a peds patient we transferred who had diarrhea for a week. When I was signing charts (which I can justify as I was double checking my charting and refreshing my memory to make sure it was accurate), I took a peek at the chart to see if the cultures were positive for anything and thankfully they were not.

We were super short too. I remember when I thought that I was over it and it turned out to be the imodium finally kicking in. I was sick that night so they acquired imodium for me so I could continue to work. I scared this girl sooo bad when I put the chart down and I was like "here's your chart, I'm going to be sick!!!!"

My facility requires you to stay out until you've gone 48 hours without, stool, vomiting or fever.....Call out and don't feel bad about it.

Do the right thing and stay home when you are infected with norovirus or the flu

Call in and don't feel guilty. Its norovirus season. Its not worth the risk of infecting your coworkers and patients. Rest up, drink lots of fluids, and feel better :)
