Any RNs that are fitness instructors?

Nurses Stress 101

Published

I recently started teaching fitness classes. I teach aerobics and toning classes. Are there any other RNs here that are also fitness instructors?

Specializes in Emergency.

I have my Bachelors in Exercise Science and working on my ADN...

I am a personal trainer right now and into fitness pretty big time. I teach classes and train peeps.

Specializes in MHSA.

wlb06,

what is your advice on certification? I love nursing but I am quickly getting out of shape so my goal is nursing 24-32 hours a week then pick up some fitness/ training sessions for supplemental income and motivation to get into the gym. I love working out & all but never really though about becoming a certified trainer. I have read some specializations on working with elderly, children or medically fragile folks which has a strong appeal. I am finishing my BSN in May then hope to pick up training for recert. I have read a multitude of training schools & certs, what are most gyms and people who know fitness looking for? thanks, Holly

Ok, since you are getting a bachelors degree in science, that qualifies you to take the exam for the ACSM HFI or CPT, go to their website and check them out, they are pretty much top of the line and mainly because you can only get their certification with a bachelors degree. That is if you want the gold standard certification, that employers love, and clients fully respect and believe in.

I personally havnt gotten that certification yet because it does take a little focus and I am focusing on my ADN right now. I plan on getting that and another cert. after school. I am also going to do some training part time after becoming a nurse. Its great money if you know what you are doing.

My current certification is probably the best one you can get that doenst require a bachelors degree. It is very respected. It is ACE CPT, you can check that out too at their website. If you have any more questions shoot em. Good luck.:up:

Hi everyone! I am so happy to have found this forum! I am a new grad RN (BSN)...still haven't started working. However, I have been working out for the past 7 years and have always been interested in becoming a personal trainer/fitness instructor. There is an instructor at my gym now that is so amazing (truly one of a kind) that has even peaked my interest even more! I was thinking of getting certified by ACSM as a health fitness specialist or clinical exercise specialist so that I can teach classes and train on the side for a supplemental income while I wait to start my nursing career, not to mention that its one of my main interests.

However, I haven't started because I don't know if I have what it takes!!!! Another part of me is saying that I won't know unless I try...What are some personal characteristics that you think that one should have to last and be quite unique and marketable in the fitness industry? What do you all think?

My plan of incorporating my nursing degree with my fitness/health interests....???? I am currently pursuing a Masters degree... strongly thinking of community/public health (MSN/MPH). Correct me if I'm wrong, but would the ACSM certification be an asset if I am interested in planning health programs for communities/ teach various groups of populations about keeping healthy lifestyles?

Yes I am both, are you still looking at combining nursing with fitness? Let me know.

Specializes in Med-Surg, Stepdown, Vascular ICU.

I would love to some day instruct a fitness class! I'm in shape and blessed with a fast metabolism but i'm not disciplined enough to hit the gym/trail the 4 days I'm off from the hospital. I need a day to recover from work, another day the catch up on domestic stuff, another day for me and my son and Sunday for church! Enough of my soap opera....

Has anyone been certified through ISSA or know of their reputation? I am looking for a course for certification as a personal trainer. I saw ISSA in a fitness magazine and considering giving it a try. They also offer many specialty certifications too. Thanks Holly

ISSA is reputable. Although I'm not yet an RN, I'm certified through NASM, National Academy of Sports Medicine, which is one of the highest paid (many chain gyms pay floor trainers based on their cert).

Hey, I'm actually an ACE certified personal trainer and a new nurse as of January. I'm actually SO into fitness, I'm really struggling with this whole nursing thing. Fitness is my LOVE, but figured there's more money in nursing, it's still working with the knowledge of the body and how it works, but it's just such a different type of work and hours.... I'm NOT happy with it. but anyway, that's a whole different story

Anyway, ACE is a great organization and great to get certified to. Best of luck to you!

Hey LovePurple, Congrats on being an RN!!! I am also a lover of fitness! I am in the process of getting my personal training certification. I was looking into IFTA, but it's not accredited. I am also studying for the ACSM Health Fitness Specialist exam. So I figured I don't need a national cert for personal training, but I don't know if that's wise. Getting the IFTA is so that I can start getting some training experience while I study. I know ACE is notorious for it's cert for PT. Would you suggest investing in a national personal training cert. like ACE or ACSM instead spending money of IFTA? What do you think?

Thanks

Hey, I don't really know anything about the specialist, but you do have to watch the legal aspect of things, so make sure personal training is covered under what you're able to do with that if you decide to go for it. I just know locally, ACE is very respected and everyone knows what their boundaries are! Go for what you want though!! If you can get what you want from the specialist... go for it!! =) Good Luck and keep me posted!
