Any nurses in therapy?

by TurnLeftSide Premium Member

I'm thinking about going to counseling or psycho therapy. Sometimes I feel like thoughts are going 100 miles an hour through my head. I find myself depressed most of the time to the point I isolate myself from everyone. I constantly worry about things and have crying spells.
I am considering going to therapy but I'm scared of how the therapist would perceive me.

Why the worry about how the therapist would perceive you? Your sig on your post above already speaks volumes to me. I have been in your shoes and walked that road. (and occasionally try to go there again!) I ended up in the hospital because I let it get too far. A good psychiatrist and therapist will make all the difference in the world. You need to take the time FOR YOURSELF and get the help you need. PM me if you want to just vent, chat etc.

Back in therapy now due to multiple stressors and not handling any of them well. I can cry at the drop of a hat and get angry 3 sec. later. My poor husband is getting a lot of the brunt of it and well as some of my coworkers. Some of them deserve it sometimes-LOL

Not right now, but sure think I could use it. I work 7 12 hour night shift and 7 days off. This past week I have dreaded going back, I have got nothing done just a little house cleaning. I haven't enjoying doing anything I normally do. I know I need an antidepressant but I'm having trouble finding a PCP because I'm not impressed with any of the doctors at the new facility I work at. I just don't feel like doing anything but watching TV and Surfing the internet. I feel so lazy and crappy.

Right now I believe the first step would be a full and complete evaluation by a psychiatrist. I was having many of the same symptoms when I was diagnosed with major depression. It was a long time ago and I have been on medications for many years. I did go to therapy for several years and she REALLY helped me. But I would not have gotten the benefit from the therapy without the medication to make some improvement in my mood. I was so ill that I was unable to make a rational decision. I had to be on medication. Look carefully at a couple of things. Try to find a psychiatrist who has a special interest in the areas that are a problem for you (alcoholic family, child abuse past, etc). You can find this out when you have an initial meeting with the doctor. Same with the therapist. If you are not comfortable with either of them, find someone else. Some psychiatrists will also do psychotherapy with you at the same time but it seems unusual to see this much any more. Most just manage your medication with psychotherapy received by another professional. PLEASE get some help. You will be glad that you did.
