Where are you looking to work? I am a VA nurse here in NC and the VA is a wonderful place. Of course, with anything government, there are issues and problems. But, I think working with our veterans has been a great honor for me. Unfortuately, I am leaving the VA in the next few weeks as I have taken on a management position. However, I would recommend VA nursing for any one asking. Good luck and hope you enjoy allnurses.com

I love the VA. Its a great place to work. I would recommend it to anyone. It is a wonderful place to work if you are seeking to advance your education. They are currently paying for me to get my masters. The benefits are phenomenal to. I could not find any other hospital in town where I got 5 weeks of vacation the first year!!! Good luck.

I worked for the VA for a couple of years in Indianapolis and also have worked in military hospitals overseas. Not bad at all working for the government...great benefits!

What is the average hourly wage for an RN at the VA? What can you tell me about the retirement? Do you have a prescription card?

Thanks

Wages are very location specific. Not sure I can give you any decent guesses with wages, but the federal benefits are great. You have a choice of insurances (I think there are 4 or 5 plans you can choose from) and yes, there is a perscription card associated with the insurance plan. The VA does not offer a dental plan, so you better make sure you get your teeth fixed before you start working for the VA! Also, the time off is amazing! Nurses earn 8 hours of time off a payperiod and 4 hours of sick time a payperiod. I think it is a total of 5 weeks of paid time off per year!
