Greetings! I am a RN with about 1 years medsurg experience looking to apply for FY 2017 to the Navy for direct accession. Anyone else out there working on their packet or that have already submitted it? Please feel free share your experiences thus far, desired duty stations and any valuable info. Thanks!

I've been told by someone who just left recruiting that this time of year they focus heavily on NCP selections and the DA selections can often take a backseat. And that they may delay making selections until after the beginning of the year when they have a larger pool of applicants to select from - she said it's not uncommon for early applicants to be delayed or tagged as alternates early in the fiscal year only to find out a different selection status a few months later.

My recruiter told me the sooner I could get in my app the better since it's first come first selected essentially but I completely understand the need to keep the focus on NCP for now. I'm hoping they will meet in Dec and select some people then. I'm just afraid if I am selected I will be asked to go to ODS in Feb and leave my job in a lurch.

There's a good chance the February class is or will be full already from the people selected at the end of the last fiscal year. I remember talking to people in one of the Facebook groups that got their selection notification around Dec/Jan last year and they were given the option of April or June ODS because Feb was already full. But I feel your pain. I've been at this for over a year now. Hurry up and wait! Just waiting for news too! Fingers crossed we'll all hear something soon.

I just got the below text from my recruiter this morning. Sounds like NCP is the culprit. Maybe we'll hear something by mid-December :)

"The last word I got on Friday, was the boards have not closed as scheduled. Meaning they are still looking at packages. The results were supposed to be out by now. But it looks like they're not going to come out this month. The results will not be released until the board closes. I believe the reason for the delay is the student programs, and the holiday. I will let you know more information as I get it."

Hey thanks for the update! My recruiter is on leave this week but said essentially the same thing, no selections have been made yet. Schertz7 what type of nursing are you applying for and are you wanting to go active or reserves? Hopefully we both will receive an early Christmas present with recommendations for DA!

Schertz7 what type of nursing are you applying for and are you wanting to go active or reserves?

I applied for active duty - I'm former enlisted Army so my plan is to go back and do the full retirement gig, eventually apply for DUINS and get my NP with a specialty in Emergency and Trauma medicine. Because I applied for DA right out of school (a year ago), my application technically went in as general/med-surg.. When they did my credentialing they said they don't consider the hospital I work in critical care for some reason so they couldn't credential me in that area, though I now have ~1 yr experience. Which is unfortunate because the work I do really is critical care (vents, drips, high acuity patients, etc.).. I'm working on my CCRN right now - My recruiter said just get in the door and then communicate with the nurse in charge at my first duty station and try and get in an ICU :) Fingers crossed. That would be a nice Christmas present indeed!

Specializes in Critical Care.

Try and get certified in whatever area you want to be in before you commission, even if it's not in your package. The recruiter makes it seem easy to just get into the ICU. It's not like that. Often they make you wait and do your time. I know of one nurse with 2.5 years ICU, got stuck on a step down unit. Another was CCRN, with other certs and got stuck in the PACU.

Hey Duffy, I was told that you must be a bsn to apply for the nurse Corp. What was your degree in?

Right now my bachelors degree is unrelated to nursing. I'm hopefully going to be starting nursing school this spring (at least part time) starting first with my ASN and then transitioning right into my BSN program. I also have a tentative job lined up at one of my local hospitals working as an ER tech. Might take me a couple years but I'm excited for it.

Hi, just wondering if you are from the Phoenix area. I have had almost an identical experience for my journey...was suppose to submit around August but told only 1 spot left. Submitted in October and have not heard any news. My recruiter literally sent me the exact same text on the same day you posted on the 27th. Just curious if we have the same recruiter or if they have a general statement that they send out to those inquiring about boards...

I am from the Phoenix area. I'm working with CPO Fleming at the Tempe office. Are you applying for active duty or reserves? He said hopefully we'll hear in the next couple of weeks before Christmas.

That makes sense then...we have the same recruiter:) I am applying for the reserves. I kick myself for not going active years ago but it wasn't the right time for my family and now I have built a great career in acute care nursing. Good luck to you as well! Hope we find out soon.

Spoke with my recruiter two days ago and she said they got the results from the board that met in November this last Monday. However she said I probably wouldn't hear if I got in or not until mid January. Is this just because of the holidays? I'm confused as to why if they have their decision made it would take so long to let me know.
