Need job change advice please!!!

Specialties Geriatric

Hi everyone, I need your input. I graduated from LPN school just 6 months ago and I have been working in a LTC facility since. I am very happy with the facility but not the shift. I work 11-7 and my hubby also works this shift, therefore we have to carry my two babies to stay away from home every single night which is a complete nightmare!!! I told my DON I was interested in days and today I was confronted with an offer- It will be full time 7-3, I will be working a med cart, restorative nursing, writing care plans for all residents and working with MDS. This sounds like a lot to me and I haven't been told yet but I figure there will be a pay cut due to shift difference I am getting now. On my night shift I currently work I just do basic nursing and work a med cart. I want to make things easy for my family but the job description alone stresses me out probably because I am still a "new graduate" I would just like to know what some of you think. I don't expect you to tell me what to do just give me some input---much appreciated. Thanks!!

Wow. That sounds like a lot of work. What do you mean working a med cart? Does that mean every day the AM meds or all meds? How many residents will you be doing restorative with? Are they talking restorative careplans only? Is someone else in charge of restorative and maybe you will be assisting them? I know I am asking a lot of questions but I have worked LTC for 12 years and this offer is sending out alarms to me. Ask many questions, clarify the position. LTC's are famous for combining 2 jobs and giving the position to one poor person then the manager will be shocked when that employee falls behind and is out of compliance. Good luck to you and keep us posted.

Nope. If you are doing an am med pass along with the 11 or 1pms, I cannot see how you will possibly be able to do the others. How many pts would you have?

Well, I don't really know all the details yet. I am supposed to meet with the DON Monday morning to talk about it & I will let you all know. What I posted was all I have been told so far but like you I think it sounds like a lot. I do know that this job was being done by 2 people but they are combining it to one job. The more I think about it the more i think it is not for me. I will know more in a few days & I will let you know an update. Thanks so much!!

Giving meds on 7-3 is a full time job in itself w/o anything else, let us know what you find out. I'm curious how they could put that much on one nurse. We have nurses that give meds, nurses that do restorative, tx nurse and two nurses that do MDS. Good luck in whatever you choose.

Finally!! I talked to my DON.... I will be working med cart about 3 days a week ,7-3, assisting with care plans, assisting with MDS, and mainly I will be doing restorative nursing..(Weights, meals, ROM & etc...). However, I will be losing my $1.00/hr shift diff which I feel is unfair because this job is much more than what I do now.. I just don't know!!??!!??

Will you be responsible for the restorative program? It is a very heavy job. You should receive more money as far as I am concerned.
