Trying for Gwinnett Tech Fall 2013

U.S.A. Georgia

Published

So I am trying to get into gwinnett techs fall of 2013 class and i just wanted to start a forum for us to support each other and for info. I still have a couple pre reqs to take but im hoping to do well! Good luck everyone

Hey GTC2013, your score of 175.75 puts you in good shape for acceptance. I didn't know there was testing on Friday, I had tried for the last date available and must have missed that one!! Between the 28th and 29th there must have been 50 applicants getting tested, so the numbers I gave may increase somewhat - but I think your score is still well above what will be needed. Congrats!!!

Well this is my 2nd time around because I did not get in last year. My combined score this year is a 170.5 and I am not sure that I will get in with that. I noticed on my Kaplan results that I changed 6 correct answers to incorrect answers (this is what severe test anxiety will do for you) :) Hopefully it is enough?? If not, God must have another plan for me. :)

Hi. I took the Kaplan on March 28 and can share some information that I learned. As many already know, the Kaplan score is added to your GPA score which is calculated using a simple formula.

4.0 GPA = 100 points

3.9 GPA = 99 points

3.65 GPA = 96.5 points

etc.

That score is added to your Kaplan to determine your total score.

For example, in my case I have a 3.86 GPA and scored 87 on the Kaplan:

( 3.86 GPA + 87 Kaplan = 98.6 + 87 = 185.6 )

Last year, I believe a total score of 170 was enough to get accepted. For 2013 I was told that a score above 175 would "almost guarantee" acceptance and that a score of 170 or more would "likely" be enough to get accepted. Since it is a comparitive pool, those numbers will change based on the scores achieved within the pool.

For 2013, the highest Kaplan score has been 192 with five students scoring in the 90's, and "about thirty" scoring in the 80's. Those figures do not include the people that tested on March 28, the final day of testing.

Good luck to everyone!!!

I was under the impression that the final score was calculated by multiplying GPA by 25 then divided by 2, and adding that score to half of the Kaplan score.

For example: (3.5x25)/2 + 77/2 = 82.25 (Final Score)

Have they changed it from this format to the one you posted above? I'm wondering if you were given that calculation from the school or from other applicants. I ask because I've heard so much different information on how they are going to calculate the final score. Thanks for all your help!

Thanks Acanthuras! I hope you are right, I want this so bad!

March 28th was the last date available. I had also signed up for the 28th but it looks like the system allowed more people to sign up than it was supposed. When they called me to let me know this the latest date available was the 21st so i signed up for that date. And the same thing happened again! So they called me and said they were going to open a new date for those of us that had had that problem.

Hi Persistant. This is also my second time trying so I understand how you feel. I also hope that what i did was enough. Good luck to you! :)

Hi Gtc2013, Thanks so much & I truly hope that you get in this time. :)

Hi Ipatel320!

The info I posted came directly from two different sources, both involved with the admission process for GTC Nursing (and both were speakers at the Feb Nursing meeting). It is always possible that I misunderstood them :cautious: but nothing they said was as involved as the process you outlined and I believe (and hope) the calculations I posted are accurate.

Under the formula you posted, it would be nearly impossible for low GPA's to get accepted.

For example:

(4.0 GPA + 70 Kaplan = 50 GPA points + 35 Kaplan points = 85 points)

(3.8 GPA + 75 Kaplan = 47.5 GPA points + 37.5 Kaplan points = 85 points

(3.2 GPA + 90 Kaplan = 40 GPA points + 45 Kaplan points = 85 points)

(3.0 GPA + 95 Kaplan = 37.5 GPA points + 47.5 Kaplan points = 85 points)

Since many students get higher than 70 on Kaplan, but very few get 90 or more, it would seem virtually impossible for anyone with a lower GPA to have any hope of getting accepted. That doesn't mean they couldn't use that calculation but it would be very daunting for all but the highest GPAs.

It would be nice if we were better informed on the methods they used for admission, and they could also use a better training material than the Kaplan Study guide I purchased. The test I took had very little in common with the study guide. Anyhow, Good Luck to You!!

Hi there,

I'm new here, my GPA IS 3.85, my Kaplan score is 71 is there any hope?

Hi Acanthuras can you please calculate my overall score?

Hi Aanthuras!

I really hope the formula you were given is what they are planning on using to calculate our scores. And I agree, the study guide was somewhat a waste of money.

Thank you so much for all your help. I wish you the best of luck and hope to see you this fall. :)

I feel "overstressed" can you help please?

As for the admission method, they tell us it is dependent only on a combination of our pre-req GPA and Kaplan score. Do we really need to know more than that? Knowing the GPA/Kaplan combo number for my scores doesn't get me any closer to knowing for certain whether I'm in or not.

I feel I should also defend GTC here regarding the study guide. That's not their fault. I visited the program coordinator right after taking my Kaplan, and one of thing things she asked me about was how helpful I felt the Kaplan study guide was. I told her the reading was similar, there was more math than we needed, and the science bore no resemblance to the test. She shared that that wasn't the first time she had heard that. Unfortunately, there is no study guide for the Kaplan Nursing School Entrance Exam. Take a look at the list of tests your Kaplan book says it covers, and you'll see the Kaplan exam is not listed among them. Until Kaplan releases a study guide specifically for their own test, the one we have is the only one we've got.

Admittedly, I didn't buy my copy blindly thinking I would be able to use it to be well-prepared for the test. Anybody who has used it has said it is useless for the science, there's way more math than we need, and even portions of the writing prep are useless Plus, when I attended my first program info session a couple years ago, the person speaking (and I can't remember who that was -- sorry) said that they had received mixed reviews for the Kaplan study guide, but she still gave us the ISBN #.

Good luck to everybody! Only a couple weeks of nail biting left. :nailbiting:
