Emory Pre-req Questions

U.S.A. Georgia

Published

Hi there! I'm coming out of lurkdom again. :)

I got my acceptance letter to Emory over the holidays. I'm very excited about attending Fall 2006!

I have two pre-reqs left to complete and I'm a bit worried that I might be in a pickle. Here's the deal:

I've been re-taking some pre-reqs at Georgia Perimeter that were too old to qualify for the program. I retook A&P II last spring and Micro this past fall semester. For Emory, I need to take, according to their website, General Chemistry I and General Chemistry II (with an organic component). They had said at the open house that a nutrition class I had might qualify for the Chem II, but it looks like it didn't.

My first question to anyone who might know is: Does Survey of Chemistry II qualify for the "General Chemistry II (with an organic component)" requirement?

Supposing it does, I can register for Survey of Chemistry I at GPC for the spring semester. However, I don't think Survey of Chemistry II is offered in the summer at GPC, which leaves me in a bit of a bind. Anyone think they would let me take Chem I and II concurrently since I have 3 higher level sciences than Chem I and 3 higher level math classes than the pre-req for Chem I? Or, does anyone think I can take Survey of Chem I at GPC and then Survey of Chem II at GA State as a transient student in the summer? (The GPC and GA State Survey of Chem classes seem almost identical.)

Ok, enough rambling....just having a bit of a panic attack here. Thanks in advance for any advice/suggestions/etc.!

In my experience, GPC's Science Dept usually will not budge on the pre-req requirement. I was in the same situation, except with Chem and Anatomy. Back then, you had to take Chem in order to take Anatomy, even though Chemistry was not a requirement for the GPC nursing program. I needed to take both in one semester, and they wouldn't budge.

But it couldn't hurt to go to the department head and ask.... Good luck.

Thanks for the reply abmsam!

I've done some more checking and it looks like they will offer Survey of Chem II in the summer. At least they offered quite a few Survey of Chem II classes in the summer of 2005 and 2004, so I don't see why they wouldn't this summer.

Now all I need to do is make sure that Survey of Chem II meets Emory's "General Chemistry II (with an organic component)". :)

At the time I was applying to Emory, they actually had a sheet they passed out at their Open House that displayed which courses at all the local GA schools that transferred to meet their requirements for pre-reqs. I'm pretty positive that Survey of Chem I & II were what they wanted (that's what I had taken and I was accepted w/o needing further coursework). The best thing to do would be to call and ask them to be certain.

Look closely at the schedules for all the local state schools classes, some of them can be taken in an accelerated format where you take part I in the first half of the semester, and part II in the second half, so that you've completed both courses in one semester. I would check out GA State, Clayton State, GPC, Kennesaw State, and Brenau. I think Brenau offers a lot of nursing pre-reqs accelerated over the summer.

Best of luck!

I am sure that you've figured out your pre-req situation one way or the other by now, but wanted to offer you the email of someone in Emory's office of student services that I found very helpful with pre-req questions: Katie Kennedy .

If you email her the course catalog description of a course you have taken or are thinking about taking, she'll say yea or nea. She seems to be the final word on what is acceptable and what is not. I figured it might help you, or someone else who searched this topic.

BTW: I'll be joining you at Emory in Fall 06! So excited! I don't know anything about what to expect as far as textbook costs, supplies, uniforms etc. Wish I knew so I could buy some of this stuff online while I'm still working full time and have the cash! Have you heard anything from Emory or current students about this kind of stuff?

Hey - good to see another Emory person on here!! I'll be in the Fall '06 crowd, too, and like you, I'm really excited! Wish I knew about the supplies and stuff, too - did you get that email about "things to work on" (like CPR and stuff) before the orientation?

I do know that you get the books off the eFollett website - http://www.efollett.com - and you look them up by class @ the Emory Medical Bookstore, so class #s 350, 360, 370, 380 - they only have the books up for 360, the clinicals, up now, and I'm really tempted to get them from Half.com...:roll They're, like, 2000 pages long...oh, boy...:chuckle

Yea! So excited to meet you! I talked to student services last week and they said they'd be sending off info about books, uniforms etc this week.

I will NOT be buying books off efollet (bad prior experience with them!). I did find that, but I suspect there will be *many* more. Bigwords.com is a great site that will price them all out for you and tell you where to get them the cheapest. I'll be getting mine wherever Bigwords says is cheapest once they've sent us the more complete info. I wouldn't worry about the length, most will probably be references anyhow, drug guides and stuff.

I did get the email about "things to work on". FYI, TB test costs $20 at emory student health and they will see you now even though you're not a student yet, I did it a couple weeks ago. Also, Piedmont hospital offers the cheapest CPR class I could find that met the requirements. You should know too that when I spoke to the nurse at student health, she said they had decided after the email went out to require Hep B titers from us as well as the vaccine series so if you are going to the doctors office anyhow you might think about it.

Which track are you starting in the fall? I'm starting the BSN/MSN segue, finishing up my pre-reqs at GPC four weeks from now! Can't wait.

I'm glad to run into another fellow student too, my friends and family are sick of hearing me talk about it. You and I can just virtually jump up and down together "yea"-ing on allnurses and not bother anyone else!

I finished up a small handful of pre-reqs at GPC before going to Emory and was very happy with the instructors there (I went to the Dunwoody campus).

I am very excited for all of you starting out at Emory in the fall. I had a wonderful experience there. My advice...get involved! Don't just go to class!

Yes, there are tons of books!! But would you believe I finished in 2000 and I still refer to a couple of them from time to time.

Uniforms have changed since I was there. We wore all white with a patch and now I think they have navy, but don't remember if that is just the top or the whole thing. You won't be in the hospital for a few weeks with clinical so you have a little time there. Try http://www.allheart.com, their prices and service have always been satisfactory for me. I don't remember there being an issue about where you got the uniforms as long as they were the right color (or absence thereof).

Good luck to all of you and enjoy your last few weeks of summer!

Hey again!

I'm doing the traditional BSN program - the BSN/MSN segue is the same thing, but with the MSN right after, right?

Thanks for all that info about the health stuff, I still have to schedule my appointment for all of that...the CPR I had done, so I'm good to go with that...

They're sending out the info for the books and supplies THIS WEEK?? Oh my gosh, that's so exciting!!!! 'Cause I was wondering, it would be really mean of them to make us come to the orientation and buy all of that there when it's probably a huge ripoff. And you've been hit by the big, bad eFollett monster, too, huh? I've heard stories, lol - I only look up the books there, but definitely don't buy them there. Am I the only person who is really excited just to buy scrubs? Like, seriously, I think once I buy all of my scrubs and stethoscope, it'll really sink in and I'll be like, "Ohmygosh, I'm gonna be a NURSE!!!" Oh, yeah, speaking of uniforms, in 2005, they were all navy blue (top and pants), hopefully, that stayed the same...

Not having to wear white pants rocks my world! I was gonna have to buy a whole new underwear wardrobe if we had to wear white! Navy isn't bad at all. I'm going to be doing a shadowing/externship at Northside starting in the fall, and it would be so cool if the uniforms were similar enough to get away with not buying two different kinds. Know anything about the shoe requirements or lab coats? I've been working in a lab for five years and I don't think I'd know how to function without twenty pockets full of crap!

I'm excited/nervous to go stethoscope shopping. In my A&P class we did auscultations with these cheap-o stethoscopes and I never heard anything. I mean anything. Other people could hear it. My instructor positioned the chestpeice for me and everything but nada. I don't mean I couldn't ascertain what I was hearing, I mean I heard NOTHING. I knew I had some hearing loss but I never knew how bad it was! So, I'm ponying up for something I can actually hear. Anyone know of any stores here in town that let you try them out first?

oops, didn't answer your question: yes, I start the MSN part time right after the BSN while I work as an RN. I'll be an RN for two years when I finish the BSN, so at least I don't graduate as an NP with *no* experience.

Well, the scrubs are the only thing I knew about for sure - check out this link if you want to judge for yourself about the shoes - http://www.nursing.emory.edu/alumni/events/graduation/2005/bonus/BSN%20Group%20Shot.jpg - I'm thinking "all white", meaning if say, the Nike logo is blue, but the rest of the shoe is white, you're still ok...but don't quote me on that. :) I love how you can tell half of the people forgot about the shot...I have a feeling that slippers weren't part of the clinical uniforms, lol...

Lab coats I think are like, mid-thigh length, check this link, but again, don't quote me on it... http://www.nursing.emory.edu/nursing/research_centers/caringskills/documents/skills_lab_5.jpg

I totally understand what you mean about the steth - I could hear something EVENTUALLY, and by eventually, I mean like, after 30 min. of fiddling with it...and when I did, it was pretty dang impossible to id as a heartbeat it was so fuzzy, so no cheapo stethoscope for me, either!

I need a store rec, too, if anyone has one!
