I make sure i took the required prereq for admission to the Nursing Program. In our community college it was College Chemistry, Intermediate Algebra, and English 101 (Composition 1). Since it was long ago since i took my chemistry and algebra in high school, they required me to take it again in college.

Then i took the hard non Nursing classes such as A & P 1 and 2, Micro. They also required as to take Pharmacology, Nutrition, & Math for Meds (Calculations) classes. Plus a few more i won't go on details because each school varies with their requirements.

But i suggest one take all non-Nursing classses before admitting to the program since the Nursing subjects are hard. This way, you just focused on nursing classes. Plus your chances of being admitted to the program will be great since you took all non-nursing classes.

I didn't have to retake chemistry. My school takes high school chemistry as long as you got a C and if you took it within 5 years.

You're lucky! It was over 5 years for me so i had to retake it during one summer. Really hard, but made it ok.

Lol I'm lucky for now. But when I go for my bachelors, I'm probably going to have to take it.

A&P, microbiology, and chemistry I are usually pre-req or co-req that are usually done before you apply for a nursing program. However, some programs will let you take them at the same time. Every school is different in how they set up their programs. For us pre req (ADN and LPN) included:

Eng comp 1

Eng comp 2

AP 1

AP 2

College Algebra

(2 of the following) Micro, Chem 1 or Adv AP

Intro to Psych

Another Psych or Sociology class

Nursing classes include:

Fundamentals of Nursing

Fundamentals Lab

Med Surg Lab 1

Med Surg 1,2,3 (med surg 3 has different names in the LPN and ADN programs)

Med Surg Clinical 1,2,3

OB/Peds (Have different names in the ADN and LPN programs)

OB Clinical and Peds Clinical

Mental Health

Mental Health Clinical

Intro Pharm

Adv Pharm

Practical issues (different for ASN and LPNs)

I had to take 2 A&P classes, microbiology, Inorganic Chemistry (Gen Chem), statistics, lifespan psychology, intercultural communications, nutrition in addition to the normal English classes (I had to take two) and Intermediate Algebra that are pretty basic to any college degree, and the prereqs for all the science classes (biology, psychology) all before I could even apply to my ADN program.

I don't start my program until next month, so I only know the basics of how it works, but it is a 6 quarter course and each quarter is broken down into 3 parts: theory (lecture), lab (including sim lab), and clinicals. Each quarter is titled something like Fundamentals, Adult Care I, Adult Care II (I am pretty sure these are Med Surg), Mental Health, Behavioral and Gerontological, Maternal and Child, and the last class is called Transition to Nursing Practice. I do know that pharmacology is integrated into every quarter that there is a lot of focus on it in our program.

Nursing pre-reqs were A&P I and II, Chem for health sciences, stats, English I and II, general psych, and intro to sociology which are all done the first year or transferred in.

Non nursing degree requirements throughout the program are 5 LA&S electives, music elective and history elective, Microbiology, Nutrition and Human Growth and Development.

Every program is probably a little bit different but my school does this:

First semester of nursing classes (sophomore year) are Health Assessment, Pathopharm I and Foundations of Nursing.

Second semester is Pathopharm II and Med-Surg I.

Third and fourth semester are Nursing Research, Pedi, Maternty, Med-Surg II and Mental Health.

Fifth semester is Community Health and Chronic Illness.

Sixth semester is your selected practicum and Leadership and Management.
