What kind of nursing??

I know I want to be a nurse, but I am up in arms about what KIND of nurse....

OB nursing really scares me. I know from personal experience, that women lie about symptoms. They get to the end of the pregnancy and all they care is getting the baby out. Also, I was reading the message board for OB nurses and they have a ton of other problems...it was scary

I really dont think I would like ER nursing simply because I really dont like not knowing what to expect everyday I go into work.

I think I would like Geriatric nursing, but I hear it is really a bad shortage and a very high nurse to pat. ratio.

Pediatrics wouldnt be bad, but I dont think I could work around the really sick younguns...too heartbreaking

I am thinking about intensive care, maybe...surg., or the idea of working in a doctors office appeals to me.....

I am finishing up my pre-reqs and prob. wont start nursing school until next Jan, so I have lots of time to decide. I am really intrested in hearing everyone thoughts tho...

You'll get a lot of exposure during clinicals in NS. This will help lead you in the right direction.

I have my heart set on Critical Care, but know working in clinicals, something else might tug at me.

Have you considered OR? Although the cases change, they have definite routines in their jobs (otherwise sponges might get left in patient  ) Just a thought.

I agree--wait until you have clinicals and you will have a much better idea of what you want to do.

When I went into nursing school I was going to be a L&D nurse or a pediatric nurse. I hated L&D clinicals. Peds was so so. I loved outpatient chemo, med-surg, and oncology--and the GI lab. I took a job on a med-surg floor that is also the oncology/pediatric floor for the hospital (small hospital so every floor multi-tasks). I like having a variety of patients.

Anyway, you don't have to make a choice now about what type of nursing you want to go into.

Right now - I don't know. Though I have mulled over it from time to time. Time and experience is what will aid my decision.

Like you, I am not 100% sure yet either what kind of nurse I want to be. But I have found that reading up on different fields and also volunteering can really help give you some ideas. Like everyone else has said though, we probably won't really know until clinicals. As for now I think I'd like to go into Hospice/LTC nursing. I have total compassion and love for the elderly, and would like to use my spiritual beliefs in a setting such as hospice. Best of luck to you!:D Louisepug

I had my heart set on being a L&D nurse until I became an extern and hated postpartum so bad that I asked for a transfer after the first day! I never thought that I would like the ICU (too boring, so I thought). Nevertheless, I took a job there as an extern and I love it! I have learned so much working in there and now I have a job lined up in there when I graduate in May. You never know where this field is going to take you, but just remember to follow your heart and that little voice inside.

I have always felt I wanted to work as a L&D nurse, however, as many have stated here I've decided to clear my mind of any preferences until I begin clinicals and find out what really grabs me. Seems like all my friends who went through nursing school never went into the area they thought they'd like most before clinicals, so its taught me to wait and just enjoy the experience until the warm and tingly feeling tells me what area is my true calling. :D

I've always felt I'd fit best in OR, ICU (med, surg, ped, neruo, neonatal, etc), or even peds, but I figure I won't know for sure until I'm out there experiencing everything in clinicals (and hopefully an externship).

Sounds already like you have your preferences and nonpreferences, so that's a good start! And as the others have posted, once you get into clinicals, you'll find out very quickly which rotations you feel comfortable and at home in and which you can't wait to finish! Time will tell, but go with what your heart tells you. Good luck!

I'm already mentally committed to L&D/postpartum. I know that I want to be helping moms and babies with breastfeeding, and that's the place to do it! :)
