What is the biggest challenge facing nurses??

I am doing a report for my last semester of nursing school..and I am trying to come up w/ some ideas on what challenges future nurses will face or what challenges in general the field of nursing is facing...this can be local or nationally...I cannot use the nursing shortage as a topic...I was thinking about technology advancements and how nurses will deal w/ that.. but please give any and all suggestions...and if u know where I might be able to find info on it u can include that also...thanks so much!!

the biggest challenge facing this nurse is the ability to keep nursing until social secuity kicks in at age 66. not a thrilling thought.

I can't offer any references but I can tell you that electronic/ bedside charting doesn't seem to be any of what it's cracked up to be. We've tried two different systems here in my hospital in upstate NY.......both were simply time-wasters. They took my time away from the bedside, where I prefer to be. See, pts and their families don't really want you to be pecking at a keyboard while they're scared stiff about upcoming procedures. And it seems there were never enough computors to go around! Or they'd be breaking down frequently......then we'd be back to the old paper charting anyway. Why bother with "electronic" charting? According to our administration......the nurses would have more time for pt care and teaching. NO, NO, NO! Didn't work then and won't work in the future.

Maybe that would be a topic for you?

I think that the challenge between electronic charting and non electronic charting is a great topic. I for one love the electronic charting, but we used that all the way through nursing school. When I started working, the hospital did not have electronic charting. We just switched to this about 2-3 weeks ago and there was a nurse who retired instead of learning the system because in her eyes she was too old to learn it. I am sure there were more like her throughout the hospital, but I just know about my floor. I am sure where you would find this information to support all this, but I think that this would be a wonderful topic!! Good luck.

I think that the greatest challenge to nursing today is the disunity of the profession.

The outcome of this inablilty to effectively organize our professional resources has kept nursing salaries flat, contributed to the bedside nursing shortage by allowing suboptimal working conditions, and it has prevented nurses from delivering optimal patient care by taking nursing decisions away from nurses.

the biggest problem in nursing i see is management. anywhere i have ever worked over the last 14years management has always been the problem.

and dr's that dont know there head from there orifice, but thats another problem alltogeather

Nurse to patient ratios. Getting better, but still not great. Most days it is o.k., but some days it can be unbearable.
