Venting..

I am THOROUGHLY disgusted with my program. More so (some) of my instructors and especially my director.. and my fellow classmates top the list. I enjoy what I do. But I'm seeing some stuff along the way that is really frustrating me.

Okay...

A girl in my class couldn't put a depends on her elderly client correctly.. it was placed up at his SHOULDERS. (cuz that's where they BM right.. from their shoulders....)

THIS SAME GIRL was caring for a pt. with an NG tube.. she lifts up the pts. gown and looks on his belly for the NG tube!! And continues to tell the instructor, "I don't see his NG tube..." WHEN IT IS CLEARLY COMMING OUT OF HIS NOSE!!!!

This one is the killer.. THE SAME GIRL... asks my friend durring our med administration lab about an IM injection. She then asks my friend, and I quote "Like.. do you squirt it in a cup and let them drink it??" WHAT!?!?!?!!?

She is going to kill someone. Or at the least make some very BIG med errors...

What really frosts my butt is that they let this girl pass.. when my very good friend was dismissed b/c they said she "wasn't picking up things as quick." She was doing just fine, clinically and academically. She at least knew where an NG tube was, where an IM injection goes and how to put a depends on a patient!!!!!

Okay... NOW LET'S TALK ABOUT TEACHER'S PET(S)..

There is a girl in my class who has missed a substantial amount of both clinical and class time days.... she was never repremanded for it. She has had two occasions this year of being involved in a BAR FIGHT. The first she shows up to our candlelighting and then to clinicals with a BLACK EYE.. And more recently shows up to clinicals with 12-13 stitches right on her chin.. OPEN... nothing covering them!!!! This particularly upsets me b/c of my other friend who had very MINOR surgury earlier this year was TOLD by our director that she MUST NOT show up to clinicals b/c of her stitches (she was at risk for infection, blah, blah, blah.) She had to miss a total of 3 clinical days b/c of this and was given an NI (Needs improvement) for her attendance on her clinical evaluation.

There is also a very heavy set middle aged woman in our class who was taken in the directors office where she was asked, "do you think you're putting out a good image for a nurse with how heavy you are?".... This woman is AWESOME, both academically and clinically... True, being overweight does not set out a good image, no matter who you are... BUT BEING IN A BAR FIGHT SETS OUT A GOOD IMAGE!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!

Not to mention, the girl with the stitches is CONSTANTLY texting on her cell phone durring tests.. And yes.. our instructors have been notified.. NOTHING has been done.

THANK GOD I ONLY HAVE 2 1/2 MONTHS LEFT. :angryfire

I can completely get where you are coming from! I believe this goes on at every college (maybe not to your extent!). We all have the people that I would not trust to take care of the stray cats that show up at our barn, let alone my young son, and yet ,as students, there is absolutely nothing we can do about it. All that we can do is to insure that we are the absolute best that we can be. I am one of the plus size nurses to be, and it has nothing to do with my ability to care for a patient. We have students in our class who laugh and talk about "fat" patients right in front of other people who are heavy. Isn't that going to make them them GREAT, COMPASSIONATE nurses (for anyone that isn't overweight!)? Then, we also have the students who get the absolute best test scores and think they are just great, (as do our instructors!) but when it comes to relating to people- they have the personality of a pea and suck at bedside manner. Don't cha just love nursing school? I can't wait for May 11th, RN boards- here I come!:monkeydance:

well,kimmiekoo72, i am going to respond to your post knowing that i am probably going to get into trouble for it. i happen to be from the area where you live and used to live and work in your town for many years. i think i know the mentality of some of the residents of parma quite well and reading your post made me feel like i was home again. what other town would have the audacity to name a street amrap (parma spelled backward)?

everything you have posted may be quite true, but it is a psychological reveal of yourself. the disdain and anger you think you are revealing about the other students and your teachers, are really feelings that you are disclosing about yourself. what you have done is told everyone in the world what you don't like about yourself. now, you may disagree with this, but most people of psychology will be nodding their heads in agreement. and, if you care to cogitate (think) on this for a time you may realize that what i am saying is true. sometime in your past you have also done some very "frustrating" and "killer" things that deep in your unconsciousness really upset you. one way of dealing with it is to punish others very harshly when this kind of behavior is observed in them as well. it's an indication that you may not have been able to forgive and deal with your own past indiscretions. so, for that, i am very sorry for that you feel this way because i know that you fear making an error that will cause others to see you in the same way as you see the errors of these others.

but, you know, everyone starts out as a brand new learner. i know i did. sometimes we do or say things that are embarrassing. if we learn anything, we should learn to help others avoid those experiences of embarrassment because over time they can really do a number on our psychological makeup.

Teacher's pets don't mean anything...my Chemistry teacher is madder than hell at me right now (long story)....but the fact remains that I have the highest grade in the class and lab and have been able to maintain this all semester.

You don't know if the students have been reprimanded or not...would they tell you if they had, or do you just think they would?

Look at this as practice for the real world of maintaining a job...you have GOT to focus on your own abilities and tune out what everyone else is doing. Does the fact that Susie Q doesn't do well in clinical or misses half her class time affect if YOU pass or not? Of course it doesn't.

Again, focus on your success in the program...not anyone else's.

I'm not really sure what kind of advice/response you are looking for here, but I think you should concentrate more on your own studies and clinicals than on others. It is up to the nursing instructurs who gets to pass and who doesn't, not you. And it may not seem fair when certain people do or don't get to attend clinicals, but again... its up to the instructor, not you. In the end, just focus on you and get your education and move on. Nursing school is only 2 years out of your life, not the rest of it.

i (respectfully) disagree.

does that mean that every single person that vents here on allnurses is guilty of whatever it is they vent about? does no one just get upset about unfairness, or just maybe get tired? its a vent. i see experienced nurses vent. are students not allowed to vent?

yes, sometimes what we find the most annoying in other people is what we dislike most about ourselves. but sometimes....sometimes we just get ticked off.

so, yep, kimmie, i've seen some stuff like that and have been frustrated too. i make no judgment on why you feel frustrated. (sometimes its just that we still believe that life should be 'fair'.) but for your own mental health and happiness, now that you've kind of clarified it in your own mind....let it go. some injustices can't be fixed, and it only will raise your stress levels to worry about it. lord knows, nursing school is stressful enough as it is.

I just have to say.. this is the first time I have been on here since I posted that thread... and I posted it back in March, it is now June.. and I am graduated, so I had no problem focusing on myself and my studies.

But I do have to say.. that I do not appreciate being analyzed for venting... That was the title of my post "Venting".. was it not???

Some of you guys take the critical thinking thing a bit too far...

Congratulations for graduating!

I have problems with one of my instructors. Not both of them, but one of them.

I have no problems with any other students because we are all in this together. Some come to the program with more clinical experience, others have better study skills and do better on tests.

But we are all in this together.

Kimmie, not all of us are like this. I see your post as just what you said: venting. It can be frustrating to see people passing who are downright scary, while capable people are dismissed for questionable reasons.

Congrats on graduating!

:balloons: congratulations

kimmie, congrats!! ignore others psychoanalytical bull and know that you are entitled to vent about the stuff that just makes you crazy :trout: , as long as you can get past it and go on with your job.
