school says we have to cover tattoos but they dont say how. Long sleeves are not permitted under uniforms. I have tatts on both forearms. Is there some kind of thing that they make models/actors wear or whatever?

(I was gonna put this in the dudes forum but I saw an EMT or Paramedic working out of Lennox Hill in NY and she had full sleeves on both arms lol)

I'm not in nursing school yet, but I know plenty of nurses who wear long underwear under their scrubs for when it's cold outside and/or in the facilities in which they work.

Would you be able to wear a lab coat? If your not able to wear long sleeves under your scrubs, that might work.

yeah we can wear a lab coat. They said if you get cold you can wear the lab coat or the sweater vest lol. What sucks is the unis are from Barnes and Noble, I ordered mine like 2 weeks ago and havent heard from them so I emailed today and they said they start shipping Dec 29th. Im used to ordering stuff online and it being at my door within 3 days not months.

Hi,

I'm starting NS in January and my school has a strict no visible tattoo policy. I have two wrist tattoos on one arm and I have no idea how to cover them. We are not allowed to wear long sleeves, including lab coats. We are only allowed to wear 3/4 length sleeves under our uniform shirts. We are also not allowed to wear wide watch bands, only narrow bands, which I was how I was going to cover one tattoo with. I tried Kat Von D's tattoo concealer but didn't like it because it wasn't dark enough to cover my tats. I'm going to try Dermablend and ColorTration. I need a cover-up that will withstand all the hand washing and soap. I've read rubbing alcohol is needed to wash off the ColorTration, but I'm not sure what cleans the Dermablend off. Of course, the downside to all of these concealers is they are all very expensive and if you have sleeves, you are pretty much screwed. $50 is a lot of money to spend on a product only to find out it doesn't work. Good luck in your search and maybe one day clinical sites/instructors/NS will join us in the 21st century and accept tattoos in the workplace :)

oh makeup yeah thats a good idea. Im not worried about tatts in the workplace this is just for school. My brother has been an RN for years and he never shaves, has long hair and tatts and he gets Nurse of the month all the time in his ER.

Depending on the size of the tattoo, you could also cover it with a bandage. I've seen that in hospitals, and when I was a secretary, I wore a big band-aid type bandage on my deltoid when I wore short sleeves.

If you go to Sephora, they will find a shade of cover up for you and demo it on your tattoo to make sure it works. I used this when I went to a conservative wedding last summer.

there were a couple girls in my last clinical group who had tats, one used the coverup stuff, but its expensive and washes off from all the hand washing.. another used an ace bandage.

ace bandage? It can be washed daily. Take an extra with you for if it gets soiled with something nasty. Or even large band-aids if it is a smaller tatoo.

Wow, and I thought my school policy was strict! We also have a no visible tattoo policy, and while all of mine are hidden, I do have a tiny tattoo on my inner left wrist. However, we are totally allowed to wear long sleeves under our uniforms, our lab coat, or a thick banded watch. I bought a watch from Prestige Medical that is water resistant and is made for the medical field which doesn't have a thick band, but a large face, which covers mine perfectly. I do have a tiny wrist, but maybe you can find a watch with a large face.

Also, for what it's worth, I don't think make-up would do the trick due to how much you are going to be washing your hands.

Perhaps they will let you wear a sweatband? I know that sounds grody, but it's worth a shot. Good luck!

I can understand having to cover them up, but I can't understand that you are not able to wear long sleeves under your top. In my expereinces, I have had Jewish stdents who need to cover their arms (perhaps that is not something that goes on in your neck of the woods). And honestly, I think you ahve the right to cover yourself if you want to (not that you really want to in this case). And the other thing: it gets cold in the hospital!! And lab coats can get in the way.
