STATS online...would you do it?

I start my ABSN program in January, but I am accepted conditionally due to finishing up a few pre-reqs. I have to take stats in the fall, and it is required that I get a B in order to be in the program. I really want to take it online so that I don't have to actually go to school.

I'm looking for opinions as to whether I should take it online...my background in math is NO statistics experience; however, I have taken other math classes with no problem...I used to tutor Algebra, and last semester I took Chemistry and found the math super easy. I got 100% on the Accuplacer math test without preparing in any way.

I'm leaning towards taking it online...what do you think? TIA

I'm taking it online right now and I'm finding it to be difficult. BUT I'm also taking A&P1 online at the same time so I think juggling two time consuming courses is what is making it so difficult. I have to get a C but I currently have a B. One more test so I think I can pull a B.

I'm not giving each of them as much time as needed. I also work fulltime and have a family to take care of as well. So yeah, depending on what you have going on in your life I do think Statistics can be done online. Oh I should also state that MY stats class allows open book, notes, internet, calculators, and anything else that will help you, it is all done on the internet. Our 4th test was supposed to be proctored but the prof is trying to get it changed.

I am taking Stats online now in summer 2. So far it is not that bad. I made 100% on the Homework and 100% on the first test. You have to really commit to the class and allow yourself time to do assignments. I have a test every week since this is a summer class. I do work fulltime right now so it helps that I am able to do everything online.

If were able to pass the math portion of the accuplacer without studying you should be fine.

Contrary to others, I took stats online and it was extremely difficult without someone showing you how to do it. I came out with a C in that class. At least that's all I had to make. I also did well in other math classes, but this is nothing like a math class in my opinion.

If I had to do it again, I would take it in a classroom.

Good luck to you!

I've always been good at any type of Math class except Statistics. I took College Algebra online in college and made an easy A b/c I organized my time to finish all of the homework and tests, etc. I kept thinking I was crazy for signing up to take Statistics online, but I rather enjoyed taking it online. We always had Stats homework to do online and the teacher gave us three days to take our quizzes and exams.

I guess it just depends on how difficult your professor is and how much work she requires you to do online. Also, it usually depends on how you learn the material the best. Do you learn better when someone teaches it to you, or are you disciplined and can usually figure out the material if you read it all yourself? I can learn either way, and I've actually found that I like taking classes online much better... including Math classes so far.

You could always try www.pickaprof.com or www.ratemyprofessor.com and see what reviews your professor gets and whether or not it says anything on there about taking them online...

Thanks everyone for your opinions...you've given me a lot to think about...I'm honestly not sure what I'll end up doing yet.

well, every school is different- the school i went to for my bachelor's is known for weeding students out through their math program. i SUCK at math and always struggled through my classes but i found stats to be super easy. i took it online and got an A. if you need someone to show you how to do things, most profs will be more than happy to meet with you. they're all required to have office hours, so take advantage. hth

I'm pretty bad at Math and I got an A in statistics online. I would think that if you've got a good background in math, and you don't need the basics of how to work a formula refreshed, etc, you'd probably be just fine.

I took stats online, with a foriegn teacher who spoke very poor English and therefore the instructions were hard to follow but, I still loved he class and ended up with a "B". I'm also horrible at math. I'd say go for it...but only if you can take the tests at home and not at some testing center.

Hmmmm...so interesting to hear your opinions/experiences! I too have heard that Stats is unlike any other math...maybe that's why it worries me b/c I feel pretty good about the math I have done so far.

Some say the differences make Stats easier, but I also hear some of you saying that makes it harder! Now, my dh took stats years ago in college and loved it...so I would *hope* that he could help me.

I guess if I go the online route, I will just need to be very aware of where I am at and get tutoring before the class gets away from me.

Decisions, Decisions!!

I took Algebra online and did a full year of general chemistry (in class) all with A's. Statistics was not challenging because of the math, it's purely plug and chug (most of it done by my whiz bang calculator)....I think I did more math figuring out my grade.

The reason I found Stat so challenging was because I just couldn't get it to register high enough on my "Give a Darn Meter." It just seemed like a pointless manipulation of numbers. Thankfully, I had a fantastic teacher, she made all the difference in the world. I've taken at least 8 classes online and have done well in all of them (I even TA for an online human biology class), but I don't think I would have done well in an online Stat class.

Best of luck, no matter which you decide.

I took stats online and loved it. I did well (A-) because I started early and worked ahead. I only had a basic algebra class in college, but did have advanced math way back in high school (late '70s). Lots of formulas and graphing. If you are disciplined enough to keep on top of the work, you should do fine - especially considering your math background.
