A client with myocardial infarction begins to experience multiform premature ventricular contractions (PVCs). The nurse plans to have which of the following medications available for immediate use?
1. Digoxin (Lanoxin)
2. Metoprolol (Lopressor)
3. Verapamil (Isoptin)
4. Lidocaine (Xylocaine)

4. I'm going to go out on a line here and say Lidocaine, althought I thought there was a newer drug now that they would rather use instead of Lidocaine for PVCs. If only I could remember it : ) lol. I have BURN OUT, so don't hate me if I'm wrong : P

Not sure about a new med, but out of those four choices, the answer is Lidocaine.

I agree with lidocaine, it's the only one that makes sense to me.
Definately lidocaine-is the new drug that you are thinking of Amiodarone? Been doing preceptorship in ER and the Doc confirmed the lidocaine and mentioned the other drug as being somewhat new in treating PVCs
Love the questions--keep them coming and thanks!!

yeah, lidocaine
The answer is lidocaine ... decreases irritability in the myocardium in the ventricles.
I just took ACLS over the weekend - the latest American Heart Association ACLS algorithm now uses amiodarone instead of lidocaine, but many hospitals still use lidocaine - much less expensive than amiodarone.
